Mid shot of monkey in tree. \u003cbr/\u003eMore than 90% of primate species in Cambodia are at risk of extinction, according to the international conservation group Wildlife Alliance.\u003cbr/\u003eThousands of monkeys, gibbons and long-tailed macaques are being harvested from Cambodia's tropical forests every year mainly to be sold as pets, for food or for use in medical experiments.\u003cbr/\u003eThe widespread destruction of the primate's natural habitat, mostly by illegal logging, is also harming their number.\u003cbr/\u003eCambodia's tropical forests are home to ten known species of primates including monkeys, gibbons and long-tailed macaques.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring Cambodia's long years of civil war the country's forests were often out of bounds to poachers and loggers. It allowed the primate population to flourish.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever in recent years primate numbers in Cambodia have fallen off sharply with thousands being poached every year, mainly for sale in the illegal wildlife trade.\u003cbr/\u003eRoth Bunthoeun is the head biologist at the Cambodian government's Forestry Administration.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Most species of primates are facing big problems in Cambodia now - they're being heavily hunted. The illegal wildlife trade is decimating populations of all species and is extremely cruel,\" he says.  \u003cbr/\u003eIn 2000 the Wildlife Alliance in partnership with the Cambodian government set up the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre 40 kms (24.85 miles) south of Phnom Penh to rescue and rehabilitate primates and other endangered animals.\u003cbr/\u003eCovering an area of over 2200 hectares, the rescue centre cares for more than1000 victims of the illegal wildlife trade including Asian elephants, and other threatened species like this Asian tiger. \u003cbr/\u003eThe centre also runs Cambodia's only dedicated primate rescue and rehabilitation programme which is currently caring for more than 400 primates.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to vet, Dr. Nhim Thy, many arrive in terrible condition.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Often these primates come from a long long way away. They've usually been captured in the wild and have snare wounds on their legs - they need treatment for their wounds, and usually also for parasites, and many of them also need treatment for the stress they endured during their ordeal.\"\u003cbr/\u003eOn arrival, the primates are kept in quarantine for 40 days to make sure that they are disease free before mixing with other animals.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter quarantine they are moved into larger enclosures where many of them will breed. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the main aim is to prepare the animals for their re-release into the wild\u003cbr/\u003eThe Phnom Tamao rescue centre has reintroduced more than three thousand primates since it opened in 2000.\u003cbr/\u003eBut with thousands more being harvested every year, it's an
