Derbez leaving\u003cbr/\u003eMexico's Foreign Relations Secretary Luis Ernesto Derbez on Wednesday warned that the US, with its aging population, would have to rely even more heavily on Mexican labour in the future.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said the US service industry in particular would continue to require labourers from outside the country.\u003cbr/\u003eSpeaking at an event organised by the American Chamber of Commerce in Mexico City, Derbez said the US had to view migration as a positive thing, and could no longer afford to ignore the plight of millions of Mexicans who risk their lives to sneak across the border in search of work.\u003cbr/\u003eMexico's President Vicente Fox has pledged to forge an agreement with US President George W. Bush that would allow at least a portion of the estimated 3 million (m) Mexicans living and working illegally in the US to obtain some kind of legal status. \u003cbr/\u003eThe issue sparked debate in Washington until the September 11 terrorist attacks prompted the Bush Administration to tighten security around US borders and tighten requirements to obtain US visas.\u003cbr/\u003eDerbez said September 11 made security a top priority but stressed that there was an important human factor to migration discussions that the US government had overlooked.\u003cbr/\u003eEach year, thousands of illegal migrants from Mexico, Central America and around the world die trying to sneak into the United States, a fact that Derbez called a first class violation of human rights.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said the border has become even more deadly in recent years because President Fox has been unable to keep his campaign promise to grow the Mexican economy by as much as seven percent during each of his six years in office.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite his warnings that migration needed to become a higher priority in the United States, he said Mexico's relationship with its richer and more powerful neighbour to the north is strong and solid.\u003cbr/\u003eDerbez also praised the North American Free Trade Agreement, saying it helped Mexico's export rates grow 225 percent from 1993 until the end of last
