Mohammad lying on bed in hospital\u003cbr/\u003eA Taliban faction leader who criticised the militant group's Pakistani leader over attacks that killed civilians was fatally shot on Tuesday, reportedly by one of his own guards.\u003cbr/\u003eQari Zainuddin, who had emerged as chief rival to Pakistani Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud, was gunned down in the town of Dera Ismail Khan. \u003cbr/\u003eDoctor Mahmood Khan Bitani said that he pronounced Zainuddin dead on arrival at a local hospital with gunshot wounds to the head and chest.\u003cbr/\u003eLocal police also confirmed the killing, as did Zainuddin's uncle. \u003cbr/\u003eAides said the guard who allegedly shot Zainuddin, had become closer to Zainuddin about four months ago. \u003cbr/\u003eHe fled after the attack in a waiting car, aides said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe attack on Zainuddin appeared to be a sign that divisions within the Taliban have opened up, as they come under military assault. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Pakistani army is targeting militants in the Swat Valley and has been pounding strongholds of Pakistani Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud in the South Waziristan tribal region bordering Afghanistan.\u003cbr/\u003eBaz Mohammad, an aide to and Taliban fighter from Qari Zainuddin's faction, was also wounded.\u003cbr/\u003eMohammad said a guard barged into a room at Zainuddin's compound after morning prayers and opened fire. \u003cbr/\u003eHe accused Mehsud of being behind the attack.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We think this attack was done by Baitullah Mehsud's men,\" Mohammad said from his hospital bed.\u003cbr/\u003eA spokesman for Mehsud could not immediately be reached for comment on the accusation.\u003cbr/\u003eZainuddin was estimated to have about three-thousand armed followers in Dera Ismail Khan and nearby Tank. \u003cbr/\u003eEarlier this month, he denounced Mehsud for recent attacks that have killed civilians - apparently launched in retaliation for the army offensive in the northwestern Swat Valley.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Whatever Baitullah Mehsud and his associates are doing in the name of Islam is not a jihad, and in fact it is rioting and terrorism,\" Zainuddin told AP after a mosque suicide bombing attack, blamed on Mehsud, that killed 33 people. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Islam stands for peace, not for terrorism,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eZainuddin's motive for criticising Mehsud was not clear, but there was speculation that he was trying to portray himself as a more moderate alternative to the Taliban leader, although there appeared to be little or no differences between the two over fighting US and NATO forces in Afghanistan, who are viewed by the Taliban and many supporters in the region as occupying
