Mela, said to be one of the world's largest gatherings of human beings.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Monday January 14, the festival will kick off with millions of Hindu devotees taking a bath at the confluence of the three holy rivers - the Ganges, the Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati - to cleanse them of their sins.\u003cbr/\u003eLeading them will be the mystical, naked Naga sadhus, revered and feared in equal measure for their austerity and fierce temper.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's a heady mix of faith, spirituality and Hindu religious exotica that brings together millions of holy men, pilgrims, ascetics and tourists in Allahabad every 12 years.\u003cbr/\u003eAt the last Kumbh Mela in 2001, more than 40 (m) million people gathered in Allahabad.\u003cbr/\u003eHeads of religious sects, or Akharas, arrive in majestic processions, sitting on decorated carriages with their followers singing and dancing in devotion as they move towards their designated camps.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Maha Kumbh Mela, or the Grand Pitcher Festival, derives its name from a mythical fight over a pitcher of holy nectar.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Hindu mythology, gods and demons waged a war over the nectar they needed to achieve immortality and victory. \u003cbr/\u003eFour drops spilled, landing in the four cities that host the festival: Allahabad, the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna and the mythic Saraswati rivers; Nasik, in the western state of Maharashtra; Ujjain, in central India, and in Haridwar in Uttarakhand.\u003cbr/\u003eDevout Hindus believe bathing in the Ganges will cleanse them of their sins and free them from the cycle of life and rebirth.\u003cbr/\u003eThe management of millions of domestic and international visitors, who will crowd into tents or sleep in the open, is a massive logistical challenge for the authorities.\u003cbr/\u003eNearly 30-thousand police equipped with closed-circuit television and metal detectors are on alert for possible terror attacks, stampedes and crime among the pilgrims.\u003cbr/\u003eEnsuring that people do not get lost in the sea of humanity and how to find them if they do is another concern for officials.\u003cbr/\u003eThis year, the number of visitors to the mass Hindu pilgrimage is expected to be bigger than ever before, officials say.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring the nearly two-month long festival, the congregation on each of the eight auspicious bathing days is expected to be around twenty million.\u003cbr/\u003e\"These crowds don't come at one point of time,\" said Inspector General Alok Sharma of Allahabad police. \u003cbr/\u003e\"If we talk of one clean.\u003cbr/\u003eThe official opening of the festival on January 14 will coincide with the Hindu festival of Makar Sankranti. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Kumbh Mela will end on the day of the Maha
