Protesters singing\u003cbr/\u003eLay teachers set up picket lines outside the New York Archdiocese headquarters and a Roman Catholic school Friday, hoping to call attention to their contract dispute during Pope Benedict XVI's visit to the city.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They have a blank cheque for the pope's visit, a blank cheque for the lawsuits they have to pay out and no cheque for the teachers,\" said Charles Chesnavage, one of about 50 teachers outside Cathedral High School and the nearby Terence Cardinal Cooke building, where the archdiocese has its headquarters.\u003cbr/\u003eThe pope started his three-day New York visit on Friday morning at the U.N., about 10 blocks from the picket lines set up by the Lay Faculty Association (LFA). \u003cbr/\u003eThe teachers walked out on Tuesday in a dispute over wages, health premiums and pensions, forcing some schools to close early. The union, which represents 450 teachers at 10 schools, went on strike for 17 days in 2001.\u003cbr/\u003eWages are a sticking point; Catholic school teachers earn an average of 45-thousand dollars a year, about 30 percent less than their public-school colleagues.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We just want to represent what the pope teaches and preaches in terms of just wages, opportunity and things of that nature,\" said Bryan Filiatraut, a biology Catholic teacher. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Most of us teachers are doing this is for the students and for the parents, because if the parents are paying however much money for tuition and they're sacrificing, we want that money to go towards a just education, the best type of teachers that their money is paying for,\" he added. \u003cbr/\u003eA second lay teachers' union, the Federation of Catholic Teachers, which represents 3,000 teachers at 206 schools, accepted a four-year contact from the archdiocese last week.\u003cbr/\u003eUnder the terms of that contract, teachers will get a 3 percent raise in the first year and 4 percent in each of the other three years. Teachers also will contribute 10 percent to their health insurance plan. \u003cbr/\u003eSpokesman Joe Zwilling has said that the terms the archdiocese offered to the LFA were similar.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother teacher, Margaret Giacoponello, a Catholic mathematics teacher at a Bronx school pointed out that a lot of the resources of the Catholic Church of America were going into finding solutions to the sexual abuse issue, while not paying adequate attention to issues such as education. \u003cbr/\u003e\"If we want to have a lively and a correct clergy, we need to start
