foreign students.\u003cbr/\u003eThe closure of illegally-operating fundamentalist schools commenced in February, while hundreds of other educational establishments have been brought under the direct control of the government through the imposition of a national curriculum.\u003cbr/\u003eDr. Abdel Aziz Bin Habtour, Deputy Minister of Education, said a new curriculum for \"balanced\" religious education - based on a model introduced from Egypt - was being introduced into schools across the country.\u003cbr/\u003eMohamad Abdel Magid, head of the governing party's political bureau, added that even institutions normally outside the remit of the Ministry of Education were being instructed to keep within the government's new boundaries for religious teaching.\u003cbr/\u003eAuthorities have recently detained over one hundred foreign students for illegal residence during a sweep of unlicensed religious schools, questioning them about links to radical Islamic groups. \u003cbr/\u003eWhilst some have been released, four Britons and a Dutch national have already been deported.\u003cbr/\u003eMost of those in custody are students and teachers from the fundamentalist Dar Al-Hadith religious school, located in the mountains about 150 kilometres (95 miles) east of the capital, Sanaa. \u003cbr/\u003eOther foreign students at independent religious schools like the one attended by American Taliban fighter John Walker Lindh have also come under close scrutiny.\u003cbr/\u003eDr. Bin Habtour said deported individuals would be allowed back into the country to study only if they obtained
