Arab nations announced...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eWhile the international community debates further action on Syria, ordinary Syrians struggle to stay alive as the civil war pitting the regime of President Bashar Assad against rebel opposition forces rages on. \u003cbr/\u003eArab nations announced plans on Wednesday to go to the United Nations (UN) General Assembly and seek approval of a resolution calling for a political transition and establishment of a democratic government in Syria. \u003cbr/\u003eBut on the ground, these gestures have little effect. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the desperately under-resourced hospital of Al Buwaida, a small village 12 kilometres (7.4 miles) from the city of Homs, doctors battle to save the life of a young man, hit by a missile fired by Assad forces. \u003cbr/\u003eDoctors perform the most basic of surgical procedures to attempt to stop the bleeding and the stabilise the patient.  \u003cbr/\u003eShrapnel hit him on the shoulder and cut one of his arteries. He had to be given 6 units of blood.  \u003cbr/\u003eTo survive in the long term, doctors say he needs to be transferred to a hospital in Yabruk, 140 kilometres away (87 miles.)  \u003cbr/\u003eAl Buwaida hospital doesn't have the equipment or personnel necessary to perform sophisticated vascular surgery, and vital medical supplies are dwindling. \u003cbr/\u003eBut transferring patients is not an option for the time being, while 10 military checkpoints encircle the town.\u003cbr/\u003eDoctors claim that Assad's soldiers destroy shipments intended for hospitals to avoid rebels being treated.  \u003cbr/\u003eSome of the doctors and nurses fear the army will kill or torture them - or their relatives in Damascus - if they are seen treating locals, whether rebels or not. They say they have received threats and have asked not to be identified.     \u003cbr/\u003eTheir patient today is not a rebel fighter. He was injured as he was eating breakfast with his brother and the rest of his family.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There were clashes going on. Assad troops begun firing and the FSA retaliated,\" explained his brother, who also suffered minor injuries in the attack.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are only a dozen medical staff of whom only two are doctors, and not all of them are qualified for the type of surgery needed here now. \u003cbr/\u003eOne of the nurses is in fact a qualified vet while several volunteers help with administration, cleaning and other non medical tasks. \u003cbr/\u003eMore than 100 people have died in this hospital since the uprising begun. \u003cbr/\u003eA month ago, they received the bodies of 12 workers from a fertiliser factory who local people claim had been executed at a checkpoint by Assad soldiers.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Most of the people we receive are victims from shelling, then there are people targeted by snipers. Most of them if they are shot in the head they die. Sometimes helicopters start shooting randomly at the population. They don't distinguish between civilians and those fighting against the regime,\" a doctor said, asking not to be identified for his own safety.\u003cbr/\u003eEvery day they treat at least 4 people wounded by shrapnel.\u003cbr/\u003eOther patients can range from rebel fighters wounded by gunfire to residents involved in traffic accidents as they try to escape the bombardments. \u003cbr/\u003eOne rebel fighter's covered corpse lies in in a hospital room. He was shot dead by soldiers as he tried to cross a checkpoint, his family say. Fellow comrades took him home for burial. \u003cbr/\u003eBecause of its strategic location as an escape route from Homs, locals say Al Buwaida has been under heavy shelling for four months.\u003cbr/\u003eThey accuse Assad's forces of using rockets fired from tanks as well as machine guns from helicopters.\u003cbr/\u003eOnce a town of 10-thousand, there are only 1,500 people living here now, residents say. Thousands have fled; the majority heading for Lebanon. \u003cbr/\u003eAbu Mohammad has come to the local cemetery to pray for his brother who died when soldiers opened fire on a group of youths.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There was a group of boys going to buy bread and then a convoy of soldiers passed by and started shooting at them. My brother went to help one of the injured and he got shot in the head and died,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eHe also explains that 66 people from near Baba Amr were buried here recently, their gravestones bearing no names.   \u003cbr/\u003eOver 70 per cent of the buildings in Al Buwaida have been reduced to rubble.\u003cbr/\u003eFood is scarce, and the last bakery in town closed its doors a few days ago.\u003cbr/\u003eThe latest attempt at the United Nations Security Council to put and end to the bloodshed through international pressure failed last week. \u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile ordinary Syrians are left with no support as the crisis escalates into all out chaos and misery.\u003cbr/\u003eAl Buwaida - 25 July 2012  \u003cbr/\u003e1.
