Mid of village women receiving nutrition training
More than half of Ugandan children suffer from malnutrition.
The so-called 'food basket of Africa' has one of the highest mortality rates in the world - one in seven children die before their 5th birthday.
Now UNICEF is working with the government to try and do something about it.
This is what malnutrition does to children.
This child has the misfortune to be born in Uganda where more than half the population is malnourished.
Lack of nourishment is the biggest killer of children in the country where one in seven will die before their fifth birthday.
At this clinic at Moroto in north east Uganda infants are examined for the tell-tale signs of malnutrition - stunted growth, emaciation and infection.
Low birth weight combined with vitamin deficiencies, a lack of iron and iodine, multiply the problems facing the newborn. Malnutrition weakens the immune system, exposing the child to a host of killer diseases and infection.
UNICEF has joined with the Ugandan government to try to tackle the problem by a systematic approach to identifying vulnerable children.
A third of the people in sub-Saharan Africa are undernourished. Two thirds live on less than $1 per day.
By comparison with some, they are the lucky ones.
Jessica Olumpe has nothing:
"Poverty is hitting us hard. Teaching them how to prepare simple but nutritious food is the next.
Progress is being made, with a reduction in the hospital admissions for the most severe cases says Dr Otim:
"We had a year ago about one hundred children admitted here with severe malnutrition daily. Now it has gone to a number of ten to fifteen, which is a very good reduction to what we were seeing, physically."
Working directly within poor communities, the women are taught how to prepare nutritious food for their children using locally available foods.
Nutrition trainers like Alice Anywar says she can already see the benefits:
"Children in the villages we have visited are now a lot better than when we first started training. This makes me very happy, because I can see the fruits of my work in the villages around me."
Andrew Lagoo is a nutritionist with UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Fund. They are training other fellow mothers who are in the village. Always, they move around from parish to parish or from village to village telling the mothers about the care of their children. They also identify older children and adults who are severely malnourished and refer them to hospital for treatment.
Grass roots action is at the heart of the programme - and it is badly needed.
The progress made so far is still a drop in an ocean of problems.
According to the Uganda 2010 demographic health survey, 360,000 children are acutely malnourished with 125,000 of these being severe and acutely malnourished.
Besides the obvious human cost there is also an economic imperative to tackling the problem.
It is estimated that Uganda loses over USD 300 million worth of potential productivity each year.
4% of the country's Gross Domestic Product is lost annually as a result of malnutrition according to
