Close up of women's hands in steam bath\u003cbr/\u003eMillions of people around the world have been encouraged to buy cosmetics, foods and supplements because of their antioxidant content.\u003cbr/\u003eBut now research by London scientists is overturning decades of belief that antioxidant supplements increase defence against disease and can help us look younger, or live longer.\u003cbr/\u003eThese worms are c elegans.\u003cbr/\u003eThey might not be particularly glamorous, but they're helping British scientists overturn four decades of research which claimed that antioxidants could protect our bodies from the ravages of old age.\u003cbr/\u003eThe antioxidant theory of ageing is based on energy and metabolism. \u003cbr/\u003eExercise breaks down oxygen, producing free radicals, which are believed to attack the cells and accelerate ageing. \u003cbr/\u003eAntioxidants mop up these free radicals, and athletes often take supplements to get rid of excess free radicals produced during training sessions. \u003cbr/\u003eTheoretically, eliminating free radicals should protect against cell damage, to prevent conditions like diabetes and ageing.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a research laboratory, at the Institute of Healthy Ageing at University College London, Dr. David Gems and his team have been investigating the biological basis for the process of ageing, with the aid of c elegans.\u003cbr/\u003eGems says the humble worm is the best model for this type of research, because \"a worm is an animal like us, it has cells, it has a stomach, it has muscles and so on\".\u003cbr/\u003e\"If you're interested in ageing, what you really need to be able to do is measure the length of life easily and these animals actually age and die after just two to three weeks,\" he explains.\u003cbr/\u003eThe antioxidant theory relies on the fact that ageing is caused by oxidation, or contact with air, in the same way that metal rusts and butter goes rancid.\u003cbr/\u003eIf that's true, antioxidants should protect against ageing, because they are supposed to remove the reaction which creates the damage  \u003cbr/\u003eMost diseases are caused by the ageing process, especially in the developed world. \u003cbr/\u003eSo the idea is that, if you can intervene in ageing, you can provide protection against a host of diseases that come with it.\u003cbr/\u003eThat's the theory anyway.\u003cbr/\u003eThe trouble is worms given antioxidants by Gems and his team have not lived longer.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is not to say that Gems and other scientists, who dispute the effectiveness of antioxidant supplements, aren't saying that the ageing process cannot be manipulated.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says research in the laboratory has shown that the lifespan of adult worms can be \"increased by about a thousand per cent so they're living around tenfold longer than the normal wild type worms. So ageing is very plastic, that's what this work says, it's plastic it's not set in stone.\"\u003cbr/\u003eGems believes that ageing is in fact controlled by our genes.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Genes work through controlling proteins and proteins are what drugs usually work on,\" he says. \"So what this research should do is identify drug targets which will yield effective drugs which can slow ageing.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThese gene treatments, according to Gems, are already being tested in the laboratory and in a few years might be ready for human trials.\u003cbr/\u003eBut we're still a very long way from discovering the secret of eternal youth.\u003cbr/\u003eAntioxidants are found in certain fruits and vegetables such as broccoli, pomegranates and tomatoes.\u003cbr/\u003eAll the scientists agree that a good balanced diet with fruit and vegetables is beneficial.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Gems says it's our desire as consumers to chase the easiest solution. which lays us open to exploitation.\u003cbr/\u003e\"People have very unrealistic expectations from taking antioxidant supplements,\" he says.  \"In the case of taking fruit and vegetables, of course your GP, your doctor, will tell you if you can switch from a diet which is high in fat and salts, and stop eating hamburgers and chips and start eating a lot more vegetables and fruit, on the whole that's healthy.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut: \"How exactly that works is not really clear.
