Reflection of students in mirror practicing in their class\u003cbr/\u003eDespite competing with  modern pop and other western music, Iranian traditional music retains a popular following across the country. \u003cbr/\u003eMaster craftsmen continue to make traditional instruments by hand, helping to preserve this important part of Persian culture. \u003cbr/\u003eTraditional Persian music continues to attract large audiences in Iran. \u003cbr/\u003eIranian traditional music has a long history, dating back thousands of years, and is closely linked to Iran's world-famous literature and poetry.\u003cbr/\u003eIranian music with its unique instruments is usually performed by small bands which typically consist of the lead singer, and one or two accompanying musicians playing melodic instruments. \u003cbr/\u003eTraditional instruments include the Persian lute (Tar), cittern (Setar), Iranian traditional flute (Ney) as well as a traditional rhythmic instrument, such as the Dombak (a single drum and chief percussion instrument of Persian classical music), or Daf (Iranian ancient frame drum).\u003cbr/\u003eAmong Iran's traditional musical instruments, the Persian lute and cittern are most popular. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Persian lute (Tar) is a fretted lute with six strings and has a long neck and a double bellied sound box, over which is stretched a thin lamb skin membrane. \u003cbr/\u003eThe long fingerboard has twenty-two to twenty-eight adjustable gut frets (adjustable ridges). \u003cbr/\u003ePersian Lute's range is about two and a half octaves, and the instrument is played with a plectrum (similar to a guitar plucker).\u003cbr/\u003eThe Persian cittern (Setar) is a four stringed lute.\u003cbr/\u003eIts fingerboard has twenty-five or twenty-six adjustable gut frets. \u003cbr/\u003eCittern is made entirely of wood, unlike the Persian lute which has a membrane stretched across the body. \u003cbr/\u003eUnlike the Persian lute, the cittern player plucks the strings with the nail of the index finger, instead of using a plectrum.\u003cbr/\u003eMohsen Rasouli, a professional lute and cittern maker, says materials used in making Iranian traditional instruments are all natural. \u003cbr/\u003eHe explains \"its neck area which is white, is made of animal bone or in cittern, camel bone. \u003cbr/\u003eKeyvan Saket is a well-known teacher of the cittern and lute. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says that western music has reached to its limits in producing new masterpieces and now music from Iran and other oriental countries can fill the gap.\u003cbr/\u003eOne female student who only gave her last name - Torshizi, - says that when she plays traditional Iranian music she feels it reflects her
