According to the information we have if it's not today then they will be there tomorrow (Wednesday).\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Dominique Mazure, French citizen, formerly living in Kinshasa\u003cbr/\u003eOn Friday, President Laurent Kabila banned ferry travel shuttling people between Kinshasa and Brazzaville.\u003cbr/\u003eHe and his government are struggling to maintain control as a countryside rebellion threatens his hold on power.\u003cbr/\u003eArmy rebels have seized control of much of the country's eastern region and are now pressing on - they're reportedly within 150 kilometres (95 miles) of the capital.\u003cbr/\u003eThe rebellion is made up largely of defectors from the army, former Rwandan allies and ethnic Tutsi fighters.\u003cbr/\u003eThe over 250 foreign nationals and native Congolese who fled by ferry were taking no chances about the rebels' further advance on the capital.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ferry carried 150 Chinese, six French nationals, two Belgians, one Senegalese national, one Canadian, four Turks and scores of local Congolese from Kinshasa.\u003cbr/\u003eMany of the foreigners had been living in Kinshasa for years - even through last year's toppling of dictator Mobutu Sese Seko - but decided the current tensions were too great to ride out.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ferry service resumed after pressure from Western embassies that foreign nationals living in Kinshasa be allowed to leave.\u003cbr/\u003eThe city's airport has also been accepting flights from Belgium and other countries arriving to evacuate worried residents.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the resumption of the ferry service will be crucial for many Congolese living outside the city who fear making the long journey to the airport.\u003cbr/\u003eOnce on shore, many Westerners were put on military planes to Gabon, where they then could board flights to their intended destinations. \u003cbr/\u003eWaiting in Brazzaville were French troops sent to help the evacuation process.\u003cbr/\u003eThey greeted many of the passengers and helped them onto buses and trucks waiting to transport them elsewhere.\u003cbr/\u003eBritain has also deployed a team of 50 British commandos to Brazzaville to help in the evacuation of any British subjects if need be.\u003cbr/\u003e Brazzaville, Congo - August 18, 1998 \u003cbr/\u003e1.
