Teachers at the school say music is a symbol of hope and peace...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eStudents at Gaza's only music school are playing their musical instruments again after a period that saw the learning centre hit by financial difficulties and wartime bombs. \u003cbr/\u003eTeachers at the school say music is a symbol of hope and peace in the troubled region. \u003cbr/\u003eA student practices the zither at the Gaza Music School.  \u003cbr/\u003eIt is just one of a range of Middle Eastern instruments on offer for the children of Gaza to master.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I like all musical instruments,\" says 11-year-old Mariam Faza'a. \u003cbr/\u003e\"This is my first year studying on the zither. I love to practice the zither as a hobby but not to learn it for work in the future.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThere are 185 students at the school aged between six and 15. \u003cbr/\u003eFounded in July 2008 by the charitable organisation, A M Qattan Foundation, the school used to be housed at the Red Crescent Theatre in Gaza. \u003cbr/\u003eIn January 2009 during the conflict with Israel, the theatre was destroyed leaving the students with no instruments and nowhere to practice. \u003cbr/\u003eThe school was then moved to the Issaf building in Gaza and lessons resumed, but it soon hit financial difficulties due to lack of equipment.\u003cbr/\u003eIn April 2012 it was taken over by the Edward Said National Conservatory and fees were introduced to keep the school open. \u003cbr/\u003eStudents currently have to pay 30 US dollars for an entrance examination and 260 US dollars a year for two semesters at the school. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter years of fearing closure, the school is up and running again under Director Ibrahim Al Najjar. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Not everything in Gaza is a stone or resistant,\" says Al Najjar.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Gaza is civilised and the children of Gaza love music, love to sing and love peace. This global language (music) is called the language of love and peace.\" \u003cbr/\u003eA committee has been set up at the school to assess individual cases of students who cannot afford the fees. \u003cbr/\u003eIn some cases, students are granted exemption. \u003cbr/\u003ePrivate donors also often help students with fees. \u003cbr/\u003eTwelve-year-old Feras Jouda has been learning to play the lute for three years. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says he found it tough at first, but now enjoys his musical hobby.\u003cbr/\u003e\"At the beginning every one faces difficulties at the music school, by practicing at home of course they become acquainted with the instrument, and then find it easy. But people think it's difficult to learn.\"\u003cbr/\u003eLute teacher, Ismael Dawood feels his students are talented enough to compete with other schools in the region. \u003cbr/\u003e\"There is a lot of talent and skill at our school in Gaza and we competed with other music schools in the West Bank and Jerusalem. Everybody admired the students' levels and their skills.
