Yachts and whales
Each September Southern Right Whales gather off the coast of South Africa.
The whales migrate from Antarctica to the South African shoreline in order to mate and calve.
The picturesque region of Walker Bay attracts an influx of visitors at this time of year.
The human visitors come to watch the Southern Right Whales, who have arrived to breed.
The bay is the only part of the South African coastline where no boats are allowed during whale season, making its cliffs the perfect place for whale watching.
Southern right whales were hunted to near extinction in the 1800s.
Since becoming a protected species in 1937, their numbers have steadily increased, but they are still endangered.
The global population of southern right whales is estimated at between 10 and 12, 000 according to local scientists at the University of Cape Town.
They live in temperate and sub-polar regions of the southern hemisphere and can grow up to 54 feet long (16 metres).
South Africa has amongst the world's most stringent whale conservation legislation in place.
This includes humans keeping at least a 300 metre distance from Whales, and strictly limiting boat-based whale watching.
The legislation is in place so as not to disturb whales while they give birth and feed their young.
The strict laws came into being due to pressure brought onto the South African government by Marine Conservationists in 1979
One of those early conservationists Nan Rice says that in those days people were surprised that anyone would care about the future of whales.
South Africa and Australia were the first countries to introduce whale protection legislation in 1980, due to the dwindling numbers of whales.
By 1986 a global moratorium on whaling was in place.
Since then amounts of some whale species have been growing steadily.
Despite being officially protected since 1937, the Southern Right Whale was being hunted until the 1980s.
In recent years it has been growing at seven per cent every year - the maximum biological rate.
Whale Biologist Dr Ken Findlay, says the Southern Right's population is doubling every ten years.
The local town celebrates the arrival of the whales with the annual Hermanus Whale Festival (until September 30, 2007)
Glynis van Rooyen, the festival's executive chairman says the enviro-arts festival offers something for everyone
And the cliffs of Hermanus offer an excellent vantage
