So electrical waste has so many different types of materials in it, some of which are very valuable and some of which are toxic. In terms of volume in the UK alone we make about a million tons of electrical waste every year, and because it is so complex at the moment about ninety per cent of that goes into landfill.\"\u003cbr/\u003e15. being increasingly discarded by consumers because of rapid changes in technology.\u003cbr/\u003e''Dead Ringers'' is a new exhibition at London''s Science Museum which is looking at what consumers and manufacturers can do about the growing mountain of old mobile phones.\u003cbr/\u003eThe exhibition is using mobile phones to highlight the problem of electrical or e-waste.\u003cbr/\u003eE-waste can be any electrical or electronic goods from computers to toasters, televisions to mobile phones.\u003cbr/\u003eManufacturers are now under growing pressure to accept responsibility for their products and find ways of recycling them.\u003cbr/\u003eThe introduction of a European Union directive in 2003 makes it the responsibility of the producers to dispose of old electrical goods safely, so private householders should be able to re-cycle such waste without charge.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive obliges firms to pay for the cost of collecting and disposing of used electrical goods, and aims to prioritise the recycling of waste electrical equipment, because of its potential environmental impact, by forcing producers of such goods to make provisions for their correct disposal.   \u003cbr/\u003eSome EU countries such as Spain are already implementing the directive, others like the UK will comply later in 2006.\u003cbr/\u003eResearchers are also looking into ways of creating alternatives to conventional phones, making them more environmentally friendly.\u003cbr/\u003eA collaborative project between Warwick University in England and materials company Pvaxx has come up with a novel way to recycle discarded mobile phones: bury them and watch them turn into flowers.\u003cbr/\u003eUsing a biodegradable polymer they''ve created a mobile phone case with a seed embedded in a small transparent window. \u003cbr/\u003eThe polymer is stable in a normal working environment - but when placed in compost completely biodegrades,
