Various of Keira Knightley posing for photographers\u003cbr/\u003eOn the day that her latest movie hit UK cinemas, actress Keira Knightley accepted 3,000 pounds in libel damages over \"deeply offensive and embarrassing\" suggestions that she had an eating disorder and bore responsibility for the death of a teenage anorexic.\u003cbr/\u003eThe damages, which Ms Knightley will match, will be donated to the eating disorder and mental illness charity, Beat.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 22-year-old star of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End was filming in Wales and could not be at London's High Court for the settlement of her action against the Daily Mail.\u003cbr/\u003eBut her mother, playwright Sharman Macdonald and partner, actor Rupert Friend, were there to hear solicitor Simon Smith tell Mr Justice Eady that the suggestions in the January 2007 story were \"entirely false\".\u003cbr/\u003eSmith said that the story, headed \"If pictures like this one of Keira carried a health warning, my darling daughter might have lived\", was accompanied by a photo of the actress in a bikini relaxing in private on holiday.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was taken without her consent while she was on a beach attached to a hotel in Hawaii during a break from filming.\u003cbr/\u003eMr Smith said that the article could be interpreted to have asserted that Ms Knightley bore personal responsibility for causing the tragic death of 19-year-old Sophie Mazurek, who had battled with anorexia.\u003cbr/\u003eIt could also have been interpreted that she had set out to lose an excessive amount of weight by not eating properly and by over-exercising inappropriately because, although she was not overweight, she wanted to become unnaturally thin with a size 00 figure.\u003cbr/\u003eIt could further have been interpreted that she had demonstrated a reckless and foolish disregard of the obvious and serious risks to her health, had become seriously unhealthy and developed an eating disorder, and been motivated to do this to satisfy the desire in the fashion and movie industries for an impossibly stick-thin look, shamefully disregarding the fact that these actions would have an adverse influence on other young women, including Sophie.\u003cbr/\u003eMr Smith said that, three days before the article appeared, the newspaper had published a story, \"It's itsy bitsy teeny weeny Keira Knightley\", in which it referred to her emphatic denial that she suffered from anorexia.\u003cbr/\u003eBy innuendo, he added, the later article suggested that she had dishonestly set out to mislead the public about her eating disorder and by claiming falsely that she did not suffer from anorexia.\u003cbr/\u003eHe said that it was important to note that, from the outset, Ms Knightley had, through her lawyers, offered her sincere sympathies to Sophie's mother and family for what was obviously a tragic and distressing loss for them.\u003cbr/\u003eMr Smith said that Ms Knightley accepted that she had from time to time undertaken cardio-vascular and weight training for roles in action films and that this involved muscle-toning which did alter physical appearance.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, her weight had never fluctuated more than a few pounds throughout her adult life, and remained at an acceptable level which took into account age, gender and height.\u003cbr/\u003eMs Knightley did not weigh herself regularly and would not deliberately lose weight.\u003cbr/\u003eShe continued to eat healthily and maintain a regular fitness regime, but she was not a fitness fanatic as she considered it more important to be healthy and happy.\u003cbr/\u003eThe actress found the suggestions all the more offensive as she had admitted publicly in the past that a member of her family suffered from anorexia and she was aware of the devastating effects eating disorders could have.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I can safely say I'm not (anorexic).
