Wide of ship and approaching storm\u003cbr/\u003eA shipwrecked cruise ship that has been stranded for a year near the island of Giglio in Italy could become an environmental danger, activists said on Friday as they demonstrated against delays in salvage operations.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Costa Concordia slammed into a reef off Giglio on 13 January 2012 after the captain took it off course in a stunt to bring the ship closer to the island. \u003cbr/\u003eThirty-two people died. Two bodies were never recovered.\u003cbr/\u003eAs it took on water through the 70-metre (230-foot) gash in its hull, the Concordia rolled onto its side and came to rest on the rocks off Giglio's port, where teams are still working to remove it.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 112.000 ton shipwreck, according to the project presented by an American-Italian salvage group (Titan and Micoperi), was supposed to be removed before the summer 2013, but the new deadline is now September.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite their 24/7 work, rescue teams are facing various problems, from cracks in the granite rocks that are supporting both the ship and the platforms, to bad weather.\u003cbr/\u003eEnvironmentalists are worried about the chemicals (soaps, food, detergents) that are still inside the storage rooms of the wreckage and about the possibility that the ship could sink while it is towed away to the mainland.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The main risk is that the chemical substances that are inside the ship could go away in the sea and this is a very high risk for the ecosystem of this island,\" said Angelo Gentili, national secretary of Legambiente environmentalist association.\u003cbr/\u003eBut a local resident who has followed the ongoing salvage works, said workers were already doing plenty and needed to take their time.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They are working 24/7.
