Close-up of painting\u003cbr/\u003eWorks from the likes of Picasso and Andy Warhol are on show at one of the world's leading art events. \u003cbr/\u003ePaintings, sculptures and video creations are all being showcased at \"Art Basel,\" which swings open its doors to the public on Thursday after two days of previews.\u003cbr/\u003eIf you love art, then surely this is paradise.\u003cbr/\u003eHere at \"Art Basel,\" in the Swiss city its named after, 300 galleries are exhibiting work from more than four-thousand creative-types - dating back to 1900.\u003cbr/\u003eNew York-based dealer Dominique Levy is showing Pablo Picasso's \"Man with a Pipe.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIt could be yours for 4.5 million US dollars.\u003cbr/\u003eWorks by Germany's Gerhard Richter, who is known for attracting the highest prices of any living artist, are also here for visitors to admire and absorb. \u003cbr/\u003eFor fans of Andy Warhol, there are paintings and prints - including an image of the cartoon character Mickey Mouse. \u003cbr/\u003eThe fair is also hosting paintings by the American abstract genius Joan Mitchell.\u003cbr/\u003eOff canvas, Paul McCarthy's \"White Snow\" sculpture is causing quite a stir, becoming one of the most talked about pieces at the event. \u003cbr/\u003eAround 60-thousand visitors are expected to come to the show over the next four days. \u003cbr/\u003eMark Spiegler, who is the director of \"Art Basel,\" says the fair gives people the chance to see work ranging from classic pieces to 21st century creations. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It is a place in which someone who is interested, can discover artworks starting in the year 1900 and coming up all the way to today,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"So you can really trace the trajectory of our history across a dozen decades by walking through our halls.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe fair is divided up into a number of sections with the most prominent being the galleries section.\u003cbr/\u003eHere, major, established outlets from New York, Paris, London and Berlin are competing for attention.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are also hungry and ambitious smaller galleries from Tokyo, San Francisco and Brussels.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Art Basel\" is seen by galleries as a place to showcase their works to the world - including buyers and other art establishments. \u003cbr/\u003eAdam Scheffer, who is a partner at New York's Cheim and Reid gallery, says art is hoarded for the show. \u003cbr/\u003e\"It becomes increasingly clear that people are always holding back their best material for Basel,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is the standard by which everybody is judged. And it is very clear this year that people went out to the tenth mile to get the best things possible.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut \"Art Basel\" is not just about showcasing the most well-known and most expensive art. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is also a chance for less established artists to break into the market.\u003cbr/\u003eTake Egyptian-born and New York-based Ghada Amer for instance, who is represented by the picture \"Black\" which was painted this year.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are also artists like American Erika Vogt whose exhbit includes video art, paintings and sculptures.\u003cbr/\u003eSpiegler says young artists do not want to be pigeonholed in one particular genre. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I think that one trend that we see is that artists are less and less willing to be defined as being one type of artist. Younger artists will not say 'I'm a photographer, I'm a sculptor' you know,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Someone will do sculpture one time and performance the next time and photography the next time. I think they really develop their artworks and their oeuvre around a certain type of idea and then they think about which medium supports that idea best.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSo overwhelming has the abstract trend been in the last few decades that the general public often equates abstract art with \"modern\" and \"contemporary.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut according to Lisa Schiff, a New York-based art adviser, there has been a distinct move away from abstract painting in the last few years.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says the next emerging trend is artists examining reality through visual media, such as television. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I think one of the major trends of the fair is that there is a lot of painters who are doing mediated abstraction inspired by Christopher Wool and (Rudolf) Stingel.
