assistance including military hardware.\u003cbr/\u003eThe foreign minister said it was a race against time.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, the 26 allies would take a decision this month on launching the training mission.\u003cbr/\u003eScheffer said the alliance would also consider Zebari's other requests, which included military equipment, help guarding Iraq's borders and protection for a UN mission in the country ahead of elections scheduled for January.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Secretary General said he plans to present allies this month with options for a wider alliance role, beyond the military training pledged by NATO leaders late last month at a summit in Istanbul.\u003cbr/\u003eHe also said NATO military experts would present allied governments with options for the training mission \"very soon indeed\" following a fact-finding trip to Baghdad last week. \u003cbr/\u003eDiplomats said they expected the military would report within days.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, the issue is sensitive because of differences within the alliance. \u003cbr/\u003eFrench President Jacques Chirac made clear at the Istanbul summit that he did not want a
