So if you're able to vaser dilate and increase the size of your blood vessels you can get more oxygen, more blood through the body to deliver more oxygen and therefore you can enhance your performance. So the studies have shown in athletes that you can enhance the O2 max by promoting this vaser dilation response that you get from drinking beetroot juice, so that's really interesting and quite specific to beetroot juice, the other benefit is obviously for the health side of things, so if you're hypertensive, unhealthy population, high blood pressure, then taking the beetroot juice causing this vaser dilation can actually reduce and has been shown to actually reduce your blood pressure.\"\u003cbr/\u003e7. I seem to be able to recover really fast, like last season I wasn't doing any of the stuff I'm doing this season.\"\u003cbr/\u003e19. Various of McCourt running \u003cbr/\u003eTomorrow's (October 3rd 2010) Commonwealth Games will happen under the tight scrutiny of sports doctors and scientists.\u003cbr/\u003eBritish scientists say concentrated beetroot and cherry juices help elite sportsmen and women cycle faster, run harder and recover for the next unrelenting round and now they're looking to see if it works on the track.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is England Commonwealth hopeful Colin McCourt.\u003cbr/\u003eHe's training his body to act almost like a machine.\u003cbr/\u003eHis coach and the physiologist calculate what how long he needs to run in each session and at what speed.\u003cbr/\u003eTraining is constant and can be gruelling.\u003cbr/\u003eHe knows that performance is all about preparation, but he also knows that you don't get second chances once a major competition is underway.\u003cbr/\u003eMcCourt is an endurance athlete, a 1500 metre runner, preventing injury and swift recovery is vital to his success.\u003cbr/\u003eWinning one race isn't any use if it means he can't perform his best for the race which delivers the medal.\u003cbr/\u003eThis summer McCourt started a regime of beetroot juice.\u003cbr/\u003eHe like other elite athletes became intensely interested when two studies by British scientists at Exeter University found cyclists who drank a half-litre of beetroot juice were able to ride up to 20 percent longer than those who drank a placebo blackcurrant juice. \u003cbr/\u003eIn a sport's laboratory like this one they used a scanner to analyse how much energy is needed for a muscle to contract,\u003cbr/\u003eThey discovered beetroot juice allows cyclists to exercise using less oxygen than normal. \u003cbr/\u003eThey calculated beetroot juice could translate into a 1 to 2 percent better race time, that's tiny and it doesn't really make any difference to most of us.\u003cbr/\u003eThat's not the case for top athletes.\u003cbr/\u003eIn this laboratory at St Mary's University College (SMUC) in Twickenham physiologists are constantly on hand, testing top athletes in every manner.\u003cbr/\u003eThe aim is to get them to go as far and as fast as possible.\u003cbr/\u003eBut here they also know it's important to help the athletes train at appropriate intensities, because intense endurance at this level can also inflict serious damage on these young people they aim to help\u003cbr/\u003eConcentrated beetroot does have its problems.\u003cbr/\u003eMcCourt says \"if you like overdo it, you can really give yourself problems, like intestinal 250ml.\"\u003cbr/\u003eDr. Charlie Pedlar is head of sport's science and medicine at St Mary's.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says first and foremost, proper training always will be the foundation stone underpinning any sporting success and athletes, even the most talented should remember this.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Pedlar agrees the Exeter research does make sense.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says \"nitric oxide muscles.\"\u003cbr/\u003ePedlar explains that if you increase the size of your blood vessels you can get more blood through the body to deliver more oxygen and enhance your really interesting and quite specific to beetroot juice.\"\u003cbr/\u003eGenerally, Pedlar believes sports drinks do have a role when it comes to elite athletes, but he warns that most of us just don't do enough in a couple of hours down the gym to warrant drinking them.\u003cbr/\u003eBut he says beetroot does have benefits.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says \"if you're hypertensive, unhealthy population, high blood pressure, then taking the beetroot juice causing this vaser dilation can actually reduce and has been shown to actually reduce your blood pressure.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMcCourt is very precise about what he takes.\u003cbr/\u003eHe points out that too much lactose in the muscle can bring the fastest to a complete stop.\u003cbr/\u003eThere's often another problem with beetroot juice.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's an acquired taste and not everyone can stomach it.\u003cbr/\u003eMcCourt admits \"it can  be quite disgusting, there's one, there's a few of them that are quite bad, but I'm quite addicted to it  now, so when people say they don't like it I don't really know why.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMcCourt remembers \"when I first  took it I was like sitting just outside with my friends and we all went to the butcher's and got some and two of them just couldn't drink it and I was drinking it like it was a can of coke.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAbout every ten minutes, in the laboratory physiologist Jess Hill pricks McCourt's ear to get a blood test.\u003cbr/\u003eShe'll want to know how much oxygen is in his blood and how that corresponds to he's running.\u003cbr/\u003eMcCourt is prepared to take the juice if it helps him perform well in Delhi next week.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Pedlar athletes' bodies do benefit from the repair process that comes after strenuous endurance sports and not allowing that to happen by speeding up the recovery process might also be an obstacle to long term performance.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says \"a lot of it is biochemistry so there are chemical signals that are occurring in body that tell the brain and tell the physiology to adapt and super-compensate for what you've done and so if you take out those signals, it may not (the body) adapt as well. \"\u003cbr/\u003eAlso Pedlar believes it's hard to know exactly what effect any juice will have when it comes to dealing with the top flight athletes.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says \"it's quite hard to prove some of these things because it requires long term training studies to look at different groups, you know placebo controlled trials and we simply don't have enough athletes at that level who are willing to cut any corners, or to try things in a scientific manner with other athletes.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThat's not hard to understand, because supremacy at an event like the Commonwealth Games is a prize too great to risk.\u003cbr/\u003eWith a qualifying competition always just round the corner athletes don't want to take the chance that they'll be the ones on the placebo.\u003cbr/\u003eOr worse still, find themselves on a natural substance that hampers their performance.\u003cbr/\u003eIt performance on the day which always matters \u003cbr/\u003ePedlar also points out that \"on top of that there are so many confounding variables, you know they'll try other things, you know they'll try all the different things at once.\" \u003cbr/\u003eMcCourt certainly does.\u003cbr/\u003eHe also takes concentrated cherry juice which a small study at Northumbria University has shown may prevent damage from occurring.\u003cbr/\u003eHe's not sure what effect it's having, but he's believes the beetroot juice is worth taking.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says \"my recovery seems to be up quite high.  I seem to be able to recover really fast, like last season I wasn't doing any of the stuff I'm doing this season.\"\u003cbr/\u003eLike many in his own team McCourt has his eyes set on what to him is
