Wide shot of auction\u003cbr/\u003eBidding was fierce at a sale of contemporary art at Sotheby's in New York on Tuesday (10 May) which featured works by Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.\u003cbr/\u003eBidding was especially competitive over Warhol's 'Liz', one of a rare series of the artist's 13 paintings of Elizabeth Taylor.\u003cbr/\u003eCreated between October and November 1963, it's the only one in the series that has a vibrant red background.  \u003cbr/\u003ePrivately owned since 1965, 'Liz' remains in pristine condition and sold for 11.25 (m) million US dollars. The second highest price tag of the evening went to Lichtenstein's oil on canvas 'Blue Nude', which sold for 4.7 (m) million US dollars.  \u003cbr/\u003eAuctioned from the collection of Gianni Versace, 'Blue Nude' displays Lichtenstein's celebrated comic book imagery of the 1960s.\u003cbr/\u003eTwo works by artist Chuck Close also went under the hammer. The first, 'John,' which depicts artist John Roy, sold for 4.3 (m) million US dollars. The acrylic on gessoed canvas is from the artist's first series of 11 portraits that began in 1967.\u003cbr/\u003eThe second Close portrait for sale was 'Eric,' which depicts Close's fellow artist and friend, Eric Fischl.  'Eric' sold for 2.7 (m) million US dollars at the auction.\u003cbr/\u003eAlso bringing in 2.7 (m) million dollars was Jeff Koons' 'Cake.'  \u003cbr/\u003eA monumental example from the artist's 'Celebration' series, the painting appears to be photo-realist work, but is actually oil on canvas painstakingly rendered with attention to
