Protestors chanting, holding sticks\u003cbr/\u003eHundreds of youths in Somalia's capital lobbed stones at shops and cars and set tyres ablaze in the streets on Tuesday in a second day of violence over soaring food prices.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are being crippled by a combination of drought and inflations,\"said Osman Ali, a Mogadishu Resident. \u003cbr/\u003eBesides rising prices, the protests have been driven by shopkeepers' refusal to accept some bank notes, apparently out of concern that so many bills are counterfeit. \u003cbr/\u003eOn Tuesday, shop owners met and agreed to begin accepting the notes again, but Ali said no one would accept his new one thousand shilling Somali note.\u003cbr/\u003eTuesday's unrest was not as widespread as a day earlier when tens of thousands took to the streets in rioting that spread to all 13 districts of the capital. Troops fired into the crowds on Monday, killing two people.\u003cbr/\u003eProtests and riots over rising food prices have recently hit other nations, including Haiti, Egypt, Cameroon and Burkina Faso. The price of rice and other staples has risen more than 40 percent since mid-2007.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Mogadishu, the price of corn meal has more than doubled since January. Rice has risen during the same period from 26 US dollars to 47.50 US dollars for a 110-pound (50 kilogram) sack.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cost of food has also been driven up by the plummeting Somali shilling, which has lost nearly half its value against the US dollar this year because of growing insecurity and a market clogged with millions of counterfeit notes. \u003cbr/\u003eThe shilling has tumbled from about 17,000 per US dollar to about 30,000.\u003cbr/\u003eSomalia has been without a functioning government since the 1991 overthrow of dictator Siad Barre.\u003cbr/\u003eOver the past year, thousands of civilians have been killed and hundreds of thousands forced from homes in fighting pitting Islamist insurgents against a UN-sponsored transitional government supported by troops from neighbouring Ethiopia.\u003cbr/\u003eThe UN food security unit warned last week that half of Somalia's population of 7 (m) million faces famine.
