Wide of school entrance\u003cbr/\u003eBlind and visually impaired children are finding their way back into Mexican society thanks to a specialised school in Guadalajara. \u003cbr/\u003ePractical skills such as cookery and computing skills are just as important as learning braille.\u003cbr/\u003eThe school for blind girls of Guadalajara, which now also accepts boys, has been educating the visually impaired since 1971.  \u003cbr/\u003eThey have around 49 students, 11 of whom live in the school as boarders (interns), some of whom come from all over Mexico. \u003cbr/\u003eThe students learn braille, music and elementary education. It also offers early stimulation and kindergarten for younger children. \u003cbr/\u003eThe older students take classes such as typewriting in braille, cooking, computer skills, and sewing. \u003cbr/\u003eThe objective of the school is to help to integrate in to society and to live in a world that is not designed for their needs explains head teacher Clara Diaz. \u003cbr/\u003e \"The main objective we have is to re-integrate the children to society through different areas such as education, values, technical preparation, workshops, sports, recreation and psychological support \"\u003cbr/\u003eThe school does not charge the students or their families. It survives financially through donations, private funding and with the help of foundations such as Target and Kellogg.\u003cbr/\u003eEight year old Mauricio used to live in Leon, in the neighbouring state of Guanajuato. \u003cbr/\u003eHis father's job was transferred to Guadalajara and Mauricio got the opportunity to attend this special school. \u003cbr/\u003eMauricio says he learns much more here than at his old school. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Yes they didn't know the braille system (at his old school in Leon) or the abacus and that is why I changed schools, to learn.
