We set about two years ago to put together a team of journalists, writers and close comrades of Madiba to basically put together a portrait that would compliment 'Long Walk to Freedom'. 'Long Walk to Freedom' is his autobiography, this is a biography, a portrait told with the voices of lots of the key individuals that have been friends, and the comrades, and then have been associated with Madiba since his release.\"\u003cbr/\u003e12. Close-up of book\u003cbr/\u003eFormer South African president Nelson Mandela and his successor appeared together on Monday at the launch of a book celebrating the life of the man who spent 27 years in jail before becoming South Africa's first democratically elected president.\u003cbr/\u003eThabo Mbeki attended the launch of \"Mandela - The Authorised Portrait,\" a new biography of the man who spent 27 years in jail before becoming South Africa's first democratically elected president in 1994. \u003cbr/\u003eThe book includes photographs of Mandela, copies of some of his letters from prison, and contributions by world leaders, friends and associates from former U.S. President Bill Clinton to boxing legend Muhammad Ali.\u003cbr/\u003eA frail Mandela, 88, was supported by Mbeki as he entered the jam-packed venue at the headquarters of Mandela's charitable foundation. \u003cbr/\u003eSeated throughout the launch, Mandela looked pensive but also made jokes and beamed at the guests, who included former Robben Island inmates such as veteran ANC member Ahmed Kathrada and politician-turned-businessman Tokyo Sexwale.\u003cbr/\u003eJakes Gerwel, Chairman of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, said the book was \"a celebration of one of the most celebrated lives of our times.\"\u003cbr/\u003ePublished by New Zealand publishing house PQ Blackwell, it contains an impressive set of photographs of Mandela.\u003cbr/\u003ePublisher Geoff Blackwell said that he wanted to create a portrait that would compliment Mandela's autobiography, 'Long Walk to Freedom'. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We set about two years ago to put together a team of journalists, writers and close comrades of Madiba (Nelson Mandela).\"\u003cbr/\u003eMandela presented Mbeki with a signed copy of the book but the two men did not address the audience.\u003cbr/\u003eMandela and Mbeki, who succeeded him in 1999, have seldom been seen together in recent years.
