Wide shot of speech\u003cbr/\u003eA US trade official called on China to jail product counterfeiters, warning an audience of Chinese business students on Monday that rampant piracy was ruining their economy and the country's reputation.\u003cbr/\u003eWilliam Lash, a deputy US commerce secretary, said in a speech at Beijing's University of International Business and Economics, that \"pirates  respect force.\"\u003cbr/\u003eChina last week announced that authorities had arrested 419 people and seized goods worth 100 million (m) yuan (12 million US dollars) in a crackdown on the piracy of trademarks begun five months ago.\u003cbr/\u003eLash, Washington's top anti-piracy official, called for closer US-Chinese cooperation in enforcement.\u003cbr/\u003eChina is regarded as the world's biggest source of counterfeit goods ranging from movies and designer clothes to medicines and food. The fakes are readily available in every city around the country despite an ongoing efforts by the government to curb supplies.\u003cbr/\u003eEstimates of lost potential sales to legitimate producers range from 16 (b) billion US dollars to 50 (b) billion US dollars a year.\u003cbr/\u003eLash warned the students that their futures as innovators of Chinese products will likely be affected if the problem is not solved.\u003cbr/\u003eLash also highlighted the potential dangers of counterfeit goods such as medicines, brake pads or baby food and said that \"piracy is a life-and-death issue.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAt least a dozen infants died last year from malnutrition after drinking phoney milk formula in eastern China. Another 200 babies suffered wasted limbs and swollen heads, common symptoms of malnutrition.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen asked about China's politically-sensitive exchange rate controls, Lash said the American people and businesses have a \"deep concern\" for the issue and wants to see China make steps to confirm their \"obligation of openness and transparency.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe United States and other governments have been pressuring Beijing to let its currency, the yuan, rise in value and eventually trade freely. The trading partners contend the government-set exchange rate is up to 40 percent too low, making Chinese exports unfairly cheap and hurting foreign competitors.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother sensitive issue of trade between the two countries revolves around textiles.\u003cbr/\u003eThe US textile and clothing industry asked Washington on Wednesday to re-impose quotas on 14 categories of clothing to protect American manufacturers from Chinese imports. Earlier this week, the US government agreed to investigate whether to impose quotas.\u003cbr/\u003eChina's Ministry of Commerce vehemently protested against any efforts by the United States, and also the European Union, to stem surging imports of Chinese textiles, warning such moves could harm world trade.\u003cbr/\u003eLash said it would be \"irresponsible for any nation\" to not investigate what
