Duck swimming in the Potomac River, shift focus to cherry blossom\u003cbr/\u003eVisitors braved the cold weather in Washington DC on Monday to take in the spectacular sights at the National Cherry Blossom Festival.\u003cbr/\u003eThe annual event in the US capital attracts approximately one (m) million visitors to Washington every year, for an event that spans over three weekends. \u003cbr/\u003eThis year, the flowering trees that have come to symbolise the friendship between the United States and Japan are blooming for the 99th time.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cherry blossom tradition began with a gift of trees from Tokyo to Washington in 1912.  \u003cbr/\u003eThen-first lady Helen Taft and the wife of Japan's ambassador planted the first two trees. \u003cbr/\u003eAbout 100 of the original three thousand trees are still growing, while thousands of others have been replaced or grown from the original trees' genetic line. \u003cbr/\u003eDuring World War II, the festival was suspended, but after the war, the festival grew as Japan rebuilt and a Washington group was formed to stage the festival each year.\u003cbr/\u003eThis year's festival opened in the wake of the devastating natural disasters that hit Japan.\u003cbr/\u003eBefore the two-week event opened on Saturday, organisers held a fundraising walk and vigil among the trees for victims of the 11 March earthquake and tsunami.\u003cbr/\u003eExperts from the National Park Service have predicted the peak bloom period for the cherry blossoms this year will be from Tuesday to Friday.  \u003cbr/\u003eAnd though the weather is expected to be unseasonably chilly this week, it hasn't stopped enthusiasts from around the world from enjoying the blooming buds.\u003cbr/\u003eVisitors on Monday strolled around the Tidal Basin, taking photographs and enjoying the picturesque views of the blooming cherry trees.\u003cbr/\u003eThis year, organisers have gone high tech, creating a new app for iPhones and Android phones with a guide to the festival.\u003cbr/\u003eAlso for the first time this year, the festival partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation to help people plant their own cherry blossom trees
