Unfortunately the development of this cancer (is) influenced by many things including the habits of patients. Various of people smoking \u003cbr/\u003eLung cancer is the biggest single killer in the European Union, with Hungary suffering the worst rate of the disease.\u003cbr/\u003eNext week a United Nations summit will tackle the worldwide surge in the Big 5 killers - cancer, heart and lung disease, stroke and diabetes - many of which can be prevented by adopting a healthier lifestyle.\u003cbr/\u003eAndras Gulyas used to be a builder.\u003cbr/\u003eBut now, at just 47 years old, he no longer has a job and he''s forced to use a wheelchair to move around.\u003cbr/\u003eToday he''s having a chest X-ray at the mobile lung screening unit of the Maltese Charity Service, set up in the Hungarian capital Budapest.\u003cbr/\u003eLast summer Gulyas felt acute pain in his leg and was rushed to hospital.\u003cbr/\u003eIt was thrombosis caused by his lifelong habit of smoking fifty cigarettes a day - doctors were forced to amputate.\u003cbr/\u003eSince then Gulyas has tried, but failed, to stop smoking.\u003cbr/\u003eGulyas is fully aware that his health is suffering because of smoking, but says he is addicted:\u003cbr/\u003e\"I have to solve stress. How can I say? If I''m nervous, I go for a cigarette immediately. Or if I miss something, I go for a cigarette. This is how it is with this habit.\"\u003cbr/\u003eGulyas is trapped in a vicious cycle. Stressed by not having a job, he says he smokes because of that. In turn his health continues to deteriorate.\u003cbr/\u003eThings are going from bad to worse. Radiographer Lajos Tabak believes part of Gulyas''s lung has collapsed.\u003cbr/\u003eActive or passive smoking causes around 90 percent of all lung cancers and 30 percent of other cancers, according to the European Union (EU).\u003cbr/\u003eLung cancer kills about 650,000 people every year, making it the single biggest avoidable cause of death in the EU. \u003cbr/\u003eIt''s a global problem, but the most recent data from Hungary''s Central Statistical Office shows the country has the highest death rate from lung cancer in the European Union.\u003cbr/\u003eThe risk of dying from lung cancer in Hungarian men under 65 is 131% higher than the average for the 27 EU states. \u003cbr/\u003eAround 255 men in every 100,000 of population die from the disease. That''s almost double the death rate among women - at around 131 per 100,000.\u003cbr/\u003eThat doesn''t surprise Lajos Tabak, who has seen the disease increase in recent years:\u003cbr/\u003e\"According to experts working in the health sector, the number of lung cancers is on the rise. Here we see many more patients with it in the last five years, than before.\"  \u003cbr/\u003eOne hundred people are scanned by this small unit every day.\u003cbr/\u003eStaff running the mobile screening unit aren''t allowed to make diagnoses, instead the X-rays are sent to the hospital for the doctor to analyse.\u003cbr/\u003eHungary is also experiencing high levels of heart diseases and doctors say tobacco smoking and stress are the main factors.\u003cbr/\u003eMany of the results end up in the  Pathology \u0026amp; Experimental Cancer Research laboratory at Semmelweis University.\u003cbr/\u003eIt''s run by Professor Andras Matolcsy. All of those help to prevent cardiovascular disease development.\"  \u003cbr/\u003eOn Monday (September 18,19) in New York, the United Nations summit on the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases will address the global problem of so-called ''lifestyle diseases''. \u003cbr/\u003eDelegates will discuss ways to tackle the death toll from the Big 5, and look for ways to encourage
