But now a controversial law could end the activities of...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eRussian/Eng/Nat\u003cbr/\u003eSince the fall of the Soviet Union Russia has become the favourite stomping ground for religious sects and missionaries from Pentecostals to Jehovah's Witnesses.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut now a controversial law could end the activities of imported religions on Russian soil. \u003cbr/\u003eOpponents say the bill will end religious freedom in Russia, supporters believe it will protect Russians from the influence of imported beliefs.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the few national institutions to enjoy a taste of newly acquired freedom in Russia is the Church.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter decades of state-enforced atheism and harassment of believers during the Soviet era, religious groups are now free to worship.\u003cbr/\u003eAlthough Russia's Orthodox church was privileged in Tsarist times, the new multinational Russia has become the home of dozens of religions.\u003cbr/\u003eThis Pentecostal church congregation in Staraya Kupavna, outside Moscow, was formed two years ago.\u003cbr/\u003eThe beginning was an optimistic one, with the congregation rapidly growing in size. \u003cbr/\u003eBut all of a sudden local authorities ordered Pentecostals out of rented premises.\u003cbr/\u003eToday, worshippers have to hold their meetings in a nondescript Russian apartment block. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Russian)\u003cbr/\u003e\"The local Orthodox priest had the habit of going to the local authorities and complaining about us. He was pressurising the mayor of the town to clamp down on our activities, claiming that we are some sect that appeared from nowhere and that we were very dangerous for the local community.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPER CAPTION: Sergey Ochkasov, Pentecostal pastor\u003cbr/\u003eThe situation in Kupavna reflects the larger picture in Russia. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Orthodox church is rapidly gaining influence in Russian life. \u003cbr/\u003ePractically no event of state importance goes without the presence of clergymen.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd top state officials, most of them ex-communists, are becoming increasingly apparent at Orthodox church events.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Russian Duma, dominated by Communists and nationalists, sees the Orthodox church as an institution of state importance. \u003cbr/\u003eLast month, the Duma took up a new law on religious organisations.\u003cbr/\u003eCalled \"On Freedom of Conscience and Religious Association\", the bill states that only denominations that have operated in Russia for at least 15 years may establish new religious organisations.\u003cbr/\u003eProponents of the new law insist it does nothing more than reflect the demands of people. \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (Russian)\u003cbr/\u003e\"Society very strongly rejects these newly appeared churches.
