Wide view of Saint Peter's cupola from terrace\u003cbr/\u003eWhile the number of Catholics jumped to more than one billion (b) around the globe during John Paul II's 26-year papacy, the number of new priests hasn't kept pace. \u003cbr/\u003eDuring John Paul's reign, there were about 201,000 ordinations of new priests, with Europe registering 40 percent of the total, followed by North and South America at 30 percent, Asia at 17 percent and Africa at 12 percent.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the number of priests in the world declined by nearly 3.7 percent from 1978 to 2003, the last year that figures were available.\u003cbr/\u003eThe decline is most acute in Europe and North America, where social change and sex abuse scandals have made the Catholic priesthood - with its lifetime commitment and mandatory celibacy - an unpopular career.\u003cbr/\u003eReversing the decline among numbers of European and American men entering the priesthood will be a major challenge for the next pope.\u003cbr/\u003eFigures available from the French Bishops' Confederation state that the number of priests in France dropped 27 percent between 1990 and 2002. \u003cbr/\u003eMarie-Caroline de Marliave, spokeswoman for the Confederation, said the number of people becoming priests had been dropping steadily over the past three decades, despite John Paul's impact on the young.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We can see over the last thirty years that there's been a continuous drop in vocations,\" she said. \u003cbr/\u003eArnaud Sirvin, a Catholic student who watched the live broadcast of the Pope's funeral at Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, said that despite being moved by the gathering, he had no plans to become a man of the cloth.\u003cbr/\u003eFrance in the mid-1970s became the first predominantly Catholic country in Europe to suffer a collapse in seminarian numbers. A generation ago the country produced about 800 new priests annually, but today manages just 100.\u003cbr/\u003eThis year, the French Pontifical seminary of Saint Louis des Francais in Rome celebrates the 150th anniversary since its foundation. \u003cbr/\u003eThe seminary has hosted around 4700 students from France and other francophone countries since it was founded.\u003cbr/\u003eRecent restoration of the seminary has revealed ancient frescos, but it needs student priests to fill its library, corridors and refectory.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Rector, Father Yves-Marie Fradet says that over the years, the seminary has adapted to take in students from around the world. \u003cbr/\u003eSeminary directors across Europe say there's no easy way of encouraging young men to join the priesthood. \u003cbr/\u003eThey're divided about whether ending celibacy - which requires priests to focus on the needs of the community rather than a family - is part of the
