Close of radio controlled Go Mini spinning around and driving off\u003cbr/\u003eClassic toys are one of the top trends at the London Toy Fair - this means plastic is out and chunky wood is in.\u003cbr/\u003eBut can classic toys really hope to compete with their electronic rivals in the 21st Century?\u003cbr/\u003eNo batteries required in this chunky wooden car - and this boy isn't complaining.\u003cbr/\u003eFrom toy cars, petrol stations, farmyards, and even fruit and veg stands, more and more toys are going wooden for 2012.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite a wider economic downturn the UK toy market remains buoyant - with sales increasing by three per cent through 2011, according to NPD Euro Toys Retail Tracking sales figures.\u003cbr/\u003eThe UK toy market is valued at �2.96 billion a year, making it the largest in Europe.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd classic toys fare well in the market; classic building block sets accounted for 20 per cent of toy sales in 2011, with dolls the third most popular toy with seven per cent of all toy sales.\u003cbr/\u003eBut this Farmers Market from Ever Earth isn't just part of a new retro-revival, it's good for the environment too.\u003cbr/\u003eThe market is made from solid Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) recycled rubber wood.\u003cbr/\u003eThe paint is water-based and all of the packaging is recycled. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Farmers Market costs �130.\u003cbr/\u003eCharlotte Buckland is sales manager at Ever Earth, she says: \"Ever Earth is all about eco-friendly wooden toys and gifts. It's all made from FFC wood, recycled rubber wood, all water based paints, all of our packaging is recycled packaging.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSo is nostalgia playing a part in the retro revival, as grandparents and parents buy their children the toys they loved to play with in their childhoods?\u003cbr/\u003eCharlotte Buckland thinks so.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The product range is very well received from grandparents who like the old traditional style toys, with our building blocks, our shape sorters and our push alongs,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eToy maker Hornby owns some of the most recognisable classic toy brands - including Hornby railways, AirFix models and Scalextric. \u003cbr/\u003eNat Southworth, marketing manager at Hornby, says the brand are very aware of the sales pull of a heritage product.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Whether it's a classic revival, it's very important to us to be true to where we come from, and our heritage is massively important and that's the first thing that tends to resonate with somebody whenever you speak about any of our brands,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003ePerhaps the most classic toy of all is the chess set.\u003cbr/\u003eThis Queen look-a-like is at the London Toy Fair for the launch of a special commemorative set designed for this year's Diamond Jubilee.\u003cbr/\u003eUnlike the latest console video games there's no bright lights or dexterity required in this centuries old game. \u003cbr/\u003eSo how are chess set sales holding up in the 21st Century?
