The Spanish brought bullfighting to Mexico nearly five hundred years ago and since then the...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eSpain's public broadcaster has begun airing live bullfights again six years after the fights were banned from the widely watched public channel. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Spanish brought bullfighting to Mexico nearly five hundred years ago and since then the sport has thrived, with hundreds of students enrolling each year to learn how to become a matador.\u003cbr/\u003eEvery afternoon, students from the Guadalajara Bullfighting Academy gather at the Plaza de Toros or the bullfighting arena put into practice what they have been learning in the classroom.\u003cbr/\u003eThese students are enrolled in a two-year course in Mexico's second largest city. \u003cbr/\u003eThey learn every aspect of bullfighting - the history and the philosophy of the sport, the genealogy of the bulls and the technical skills needed in the arena. \u003cbr/\u003eDuring these training sessions, they use capes and other props to simulate the three stages of a bullfight under the watchful eye of retired matador Miguel Angel Martinez. \u003cbr/\u003eKnown in the bullfighting world as \"The Zapopan,\" after the area he is from, Martinez remembers well the dangers of bullfighting. \u003cbr/\u003eHe wants to make sure his students, some of whom are as young as 12, are mentally and physically prepared when they face the deadly animal - and ultimately kill it.  \u003cbr/\u003eHe says going into the ring is a huge adrenaline rush: \"We are adrenaline junkies. Everyone who walks into the plaza for a bullfight experiences an indescribable emotion. It's a sensation of fear and pleasure at the same time, knowing that you are going to face a bull but not knowing how it will end,\".   \u003cbr/\u003eSome of the students are already junior bullfighters, taking on bulls weighing around 300 kilograms in competitions held in the months leading up to the start of the official bullfighting season in October. \u003cbr/\u003eIf they turn professional, as they hope to do, they can expect to fight bulls weighing more than half a ton. \u003cbr/\u003eFor Paco Miramontes, becoming a bullfighter has been a lifelong dream. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says fear and nerves come hand in hand, but it's all part of the process. \u003cbr/\u003e\"There is always fear but I am more nervous. The fear has to exist because they say if there is no fear there is no courage. There must be fear because that helps you when you are in front of the animal,\" Miramontes says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 16-year-old comes from a family of bullfighters and he hopes to carry on the tradition.\u003cbr/\u003eHe spent a year studying in Madrid under the Spanish star matador \"El Juli\" Julian Lopez Escobar and plans to return later this year to further develop his skills. \u003cbr/\u003eStudying the achievements of current and former bullfighters is an important part of the students' training.\u003cbr/\u003eThey also spend time working on ranches where the bulls are raised to deepen their understanding of these fierce animals outside the arena.\u003cbr/\u003eHere on a ranch 80 kilometres (50 miles) north of Guadalajara the students are honing their bullfighting skills with wild cows, which are not always cooperative. \u003cbr/\u003eOccasionally a student is knocked to the ground and there are a few anxious moments while he picks himself up and resumes the fight.\u003cbr/\u003eBulls bred for bullfighting roam freely in large fields and have minimal contact with humans to ensure they maintain their aggressiveness and wildness in the arena. \u003cbr/\u003eMexico is one of only nine countries where bullfighting is still allowed, but its popularity among the public is waning. \u003cbr/\u003eThe sport was banned in Catalonia in 2011 and in the Canary Islands in 1991, and moves are afoot to abolish the tradition in Mexico. \u003cbr/\u003eIn July, Teocelo in the southeastern state of Veracruz became the first municipality in the country to outlaw bullfighting and Mexico City, home to the world's biggest bullfighting arena, could be next.  \u003cbr/\u003eCritics argue bullfighting is a bloodthirsty sport in which the animal suffers an agonising death. \u003cbr/\u003eAnimal rights activist groups claim bulls are sometimes drugged before fights and vaseline rubbed in their eyes to impair their vision. \u003cbr/\u003eMartinez rejects suggestions the bulls suffer. \u003cbr/\u003eThe breed of bull used in bullfighting is naturally aggressive and, like a boxer in the ring, continues to fight because the adrenaline pumping through its body prevents it from feeling pain. \u003cbr/\u003eIf people don't like the sport they simply shouldn't watch it, he says.\u003cbr/\u003e \"Me personally, I don't like it when people hook fish in the mouth, take them out of their natural habitat and then let them suffer in a basket on the boat. But while I don't like it I'm not going to say ban fishing,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eOn competition day, Miramontes takes his time dressing in his skin-tight costume. He wants to make sure everything is just right. \u003cbr/\u003eBefore walking out into the arena, he spends a few minutes quietly praying. \u003cbr/\u003eHe has good reason to. Bullfighting is a dangerous sport and countless novices and matadors have died or suffered serious injuries after being gored by a bull's sharp horns. \u003cbr/\u003eDespite their fears, the parents of junior bullfighters say they would much rather see their children running with bulls than with street gangs. In a country where drug-related violence has claimed the lives of more than 50,000 people in the past six years, fighting a 300-kilogram bull seems like a safer option. \u003cbr/\u003eMiramontes dedicates the fight to his mother and sister sitting in the grandstand. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter an impressive series of passes, Miramontes succeeds in dominating his four-legged opponent and kills the bull by thrusting his sword deep between its shoulder blades.\u003cbr/\u003eThe audience applauds the skilful performance but for how much longer this tradition continues to exist no one knows.\u003cbr/\u003ePlaza de Toros, Guadalajara, 1 August, 2012\u003cbr/\u003e1.
