The most important thing when trying to bring an endangered species back from the brink of extinction is to have the habitat which the animal requires to live and also have protection of that habitat so that the animal is safe there. If these conditions are met then captive breeding and release into areas where animals are lost can be a useful tool."
VNR Save China's Tigers Foundation, October 2004.
22. A further 64 tigers live in zoos.
The World Wildlife Fund say that the species is on the verge of extinction with only 20 to 30 tigers remaining in the wild.
But whist some conservationists have expressed some concerns about the the programme.
Dr Ian Robinson from the International Fund for Animal Welfare Southern Africa says that although the correct habitat is vital for the well being of an animal captive breeding and release back into the wild can be a useful part of conservation.
When the tigers arrived at the reserve as cubs three years ago it didn't take long for them to settle in to their new surroundings.
Now Li Quan hopes that Tigerwoods, Cathay, Hope and Madonna's cubs will settle back just as easily
