Pan from media to German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at the exhibition\u003cbr/\u003eGermany has opened a new exhibit commemorating the landmark Nuremberg war crimes trials, 65 years after more than 20 senior Nazis were tried there.\u003cbr/\u003eThe exhibit is located in the Palace of Justice building where the first trial started on November 20, 1945.\u003cbr/\u003eVisitors can peer inside the courtroom where Hermann Goering, Rudolf Hess, Julius Streicher and others defended their crimes, as well as view original video and listen to audio recordings. \u003cbr/\u003eGerman Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said on Sunday that \"the Nuremberg trials were the answer to the perversion of the law in Nazi Germany.\" \u003cbr/\u003eHe also said they had laid the \"ground stone\" for other military tribunals.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Because the military tribunal ventured a lot in a political, legal and humanistic way it was possible for human rights to develop further,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eWesterwelle was joined on Sunday by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The Nuremberg trials were a first step to prevent a repeat of crimes against humanity,\" Lavarov said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe exhibit opened the day after the anniversary of the opening of the trial in 1945. \u003cbr/\u003eIt takes visitors through the prosecutions of Nazis that followed the Nuremberg trial, then on to modern examples borne out of the Nuremberg principles, such as the Yugoslav war crimes tribunal that began trials in 1993 and today's International Criminal Court in The Hague.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Nuremberg proceedings broke new ground in holding government leaders individually responsible for their aggression and the slaughter of millions of innocents. \u003cbr/\u003eThey also established new offences: crimes against peace, waging a war of  aggression, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.\u003cbr/\u003eOver 218 trial days, the 21 high-ranking Nazis in the dock faced a panel of judges that represented the victorious Allies: the United States, the  Soviet Union, Britain and France. \u003cbr/\u003eIn addition to punishing the surviving leading figures of the Nazi regime and ensuring the world knew of their crimes, the trial also served to ensure that the horrors of the Nazi era could not be forgotten inside Germany.\u003cbr/\u003eOn October 1, 1946, Goering, Hitler's air force chief and right-hand man, was sentenced to death along with 11 others, including Martin Bormann, Hitler's vanished deputy, who was tried in absentia. \u003cbr/\u003eSeven others were given long prison sentences and three were acquitted.\u003cbr/\u003eFifteen days later, the condemned men were hanged in the courthouse's adjacent prison.
