curbs.\u003cbr/\u003eTo help these sidewalk stumblers step out more safely, technology companies are now stepping in, creating applications that do everything from make a smart phone screen transparent to transforming speech into text.\u003cbr/\u003eIt may seem harmless, but talking or texting on cell phones while walking outdoors is leading to increasing numbers of pedestrian injuries. \u003cbr/\u003ePeople are tripping, colliding with stationery objects or even running into one another as they chat or type on busy thoroughfares.\u003cbr/\u003eEven worse, they can be hit by cars and seriously injured.\u003cbr/\u003eSan Francisco resident Randall Pearson constantly sees near-accidents involving distracted pedestrians and drivers.\u003cbr/\u003eBut it's increasingly the norm to walk and talk.\u003cbr/\u003eDavid Rodriguez, also a San Francisco resident, has been injured while talking on his cell phone while walking down the street.\u003cbr/\u003eThe American College of Emergency Physicians warned two years ago about the dangers of text messaging while walking, driving, biking and inline skating. \u003cbr/\u003eTheir information was based on anecdotal evidence from doctors. \u003cbr/\u003eAn Ohio State University researcher found that over the past few years emergency room visits resulting from pedestrian cell phone accidents have been doubling each year, with more than 1000 visits in 2008.\u003cbr/\u003eInjuries included walking into a pole while texting or falling spraining and ankle while talking on a cell phone. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd many more are likely to have gone unreported.\u003cbr/\u003eThe more serious accidents of this kind are bringing people into emergency rooms for treatment.\u003cbr/\u003eEric Isaacs, attending physician in the emergency department at San Francisco General Hospital, has seen several cases of pedestrians getting injured while distracted by talking or texting.\u003cbr/\u003eAs technology evolves, we are expected to be constantly connected, but there may be a downside for our brains when we multitask, says Stanford professor Clifford Nass. \u003cbr/\u003eThe more we try to do more than one thing at once, the less able we are to focus when we need to.\u003cbr/\u003e\"So the use of multiple media technologies as one time - watching TV while reading, while surfing the web, doing multiple chats while watching have considered laws limiting the use of personal electronic devices by pedestrians but no bills have been passed. \u003cbr/\u003eBut this is a case where technology may be able to solve a problem it
