Civil war, genocide, foreign invasion and continued political instability have given the South East Asian nation an unenvied place in modern history. \u003cbr/\u003eThis Sunday it marks 50 years of independence, with its prospects still unclear. \u003cbr/\u003eNovember 9th 1953 was a day of celebration. The young King Sihanouk had got what he'd wanted at last - an independence parade in Phnom Penh, following a self-proclaimed \"crusade\" for freedom. After ninety years of French rule, the colonial masters were going home. Hopes were high for peace and prosperity. No one could have foreseen the disasters that lay ahead.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the Cambodia the world came to know would be a country of bloodshed. In 1975, an artillery attack hit a Phnom Penh primary school causing a carnage. Just 22 years after the elation of independence Cambodia was teetering on the brink of devastation. \u003cbr/\u003eA vicious civil war had erupted in 1970, a consequence of the conflict in neighbouring Vietnam. In April 1975 the resistance of the US-backed government finally crumbled and the ultra communist Khmer Rouge army of Pol Pot seized power. Almost two million Cambodians would die before the brutal and incompetent regime was overthrown in January 1979.\u003cbr/\u003eToday, the country is slowly emerging from its long nightmare. There's peace at last and a functioning if fragile, flawed democracy. The economy is growing at around 5% per year. But when it marks its fiftieth year as an independent state, on Sunday, there will be little sense of achievement.\u003cbr/\u003ePoverty still stalks the land, particularly in the countryside where little has changed since 1953. Many people live on less than a dollar a day. Urooj Amlik, Country Director of the Asian Development Bank says that \"the figures show 36-40 percent of people live in absolute poverty.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe economy may look good on paper, buoyed by the garment sector that employs almost a quarter of a million people, but Cambodia still relies on massive aid handouts. \u003cbr/\u003eKing Sihanouk himself, the father of independence, recently called his country a \"beggar state\". Chea Vannath, from the Centre for Social Development believes the massive aid promoted a debilitating culture of dependency.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd debts from the past are yet to be repaid. Now old men, most of the surviving leaders of the Khmer Rouge regime still live in freedom; the process to bring them to justice is moving very, very slowly.  Until it delivers them to trial, they tether Cambodia to its bloody past.\u003cbr/\u003eAs Phnom Penh prepares for Sunday's celebrations, its people must hope they are building the foundations for a
