Turkey, which has opened its door to thousands of Syrian refugees,...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eAs more Syrians flee their homes amid relentless fighting in the country, there are calls for \"safe zones\" to be set up inside Syria to protect those looking for shelter. \u003cbr/\u003eTurkey, which has opened its door to thousands of Syrian refugees, is pressing the United Nations to set a safe haven in Syria, as they struggle to cope with the influx of refugees.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Free Syrian Army has also been appealing to the international community and the United Nations to adopt a resolution to create a no fly zone so that displaced families can stay in safe havens to ease the pressure on neighbouring countries. \u003cbr/\u003eThere is no better lesson about the perils of setting up an inadequately protected safe zone in a war torn country than Srebrenica, where Bosnian Serbs killed some eight-thousand Muslim men and boys in 1995 in what had been declared a UN-protected enclave. \u003cbr/\u003eOutnumbered and outgunned, UN peacekeepers allowed Serbs to separate the men and boys from the women and children and execute them.\u003cbr/\u003eDutch troops stationed in the enclave failed to intervene.\u003cbr/\u003eInternational courts have ruled the massacre amounted to genocide.\u003cbr/\u003eEmir Suljagic, a former UN translator and survivor of the Srebrenica massacre, said that the only way for safe zones to work would be to guarantee them militarily. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Creative solutions, such as safe areas, in Srebrenica as we have seen in the '90s in Bosnia, can result in mass human disaster, in mass human catastrophe, even genocide in one of the cases,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eMindful of that bloody episode in the Balkans, Turkey and its allies, particularly the United States, have conducted detailed planning of setting up a safe zone in Syria.\u003cbr/\u003eTurkey has long floated the idea of a buffer zone to protect displaced Syrians from attacks by Syrian regime forces, but the issue is more pressing because the number of refugees in Turkey has exceeded 80-thousand, an amount it says approaches its limits. \u003cbr/\u003eInside Syria, temporary shelters for displaced families are reaching breaking point. \u003cbr/\u003eAt Bab Al-Salameh, on the Syrian border with Turkey, trucks have been arriving daily, dropping off families at a cargo storage facility housing displaced families. \u003cbr/\u003eAbu Sameh was forced to have his leg amputated due to an infection brought on by his diabetes and lack of medication. \u003cbr/\u003eAbu Sameh was hoping to find medical care and shelter at the warehouse, but he and his family have been forced to look elsewhere, as the shelter is full. \u003cbr/\u003eThe UN refugee agency has said up to 200-thousand refugees could eventually flee to Turkey. \u003cbr/\u003eTens of thousands of Syrians have also fled to Lebanon, Iraq and Jordan.\u003cbr/\u003eThe lesson of Bosnia is that without all sides honouring the agreement - and without a robust military response in case they don't - such measures may have little effect and could actually prolong the misery in Syria.\u003cbr/\u003eBab Al-Salameh, Syria - 30 August 2012\u003cbr/\u003e1.
