\u003cbr/\u003eThe celebration began with the \"Mananitas\" Mariachi song, which is typically sang to awaken someone on their birthday. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Casa Azul, or Blue House Museum, which was the home Frida Kahlo and her husband and fellow artist Diego Rivera used to share, hosted a party that included several performances. \u003cbr/\u003eOwner Carlos Phillips Olmedo opened the courtyard of the museum for the celebrations. \u003cbr/\u003e\"We invited a series of artists, singers, musicians in order to celebrate Frida Kahlo and sing 'Good Morning' to her,\" Olmedo said. \u003cbr/\u003eThe paintings of the tormented painter meticulously examined her own emotional suffering. \u003cbr/\u003eKahlo also challenged conventional ideas of beauty, as she boldly flaunted her uni-brow and moustache.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring the celebrations several women were dressed in the elaborately embroidered Tehuana Indian dresses that she regularly wore. \u003cbr/\u003eOne performance included two Kahlo impersonators singing a Mexican \"serenata\" or song.\u003cbr/\u003eSinger Beatriz Rosas said that anyone could honour the surrealist artist \"with music, admiration or even just with going out and celebrating Mexican culture in the street.\"\u003cbr/\u003eKahlo spent a lifetime building her image as a mythical, self-possessed and often defiant figure who was openly bisexual and had an affair with the Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky. \u003cbr/\u003eShe even scratched out the date on her birth certificate, making herself three years younger so she could say she was born in 1910, the year of the Mexican revolution.\u003cbr/\u003eDisabled in a bus crash and having survived polio as a child, she suffered physical and emotional pain throughout her short life. \u003cbr/\u003eHer self-portraits helped her deal with her rocky marriage, her miscarriages and the nearly three dozen operations she underwent before her death at the age of 47.\u003cbr/\u003eThat ability to display vulnerability in her paintings is why many believe Kahlo today rivals Rivera and other great Mexican muralists in popularity. \u003cbr/\u003eHer paintings are now used in therapy groups, and she is held up as one of the world's early feminists.\u003cbr/\u003eMexico City's Palacio de Bellas Artes is showing one of the most extensive exhibitions of her art as part of the
