In November, authorities led a number of raids on mosques, which they said had become a...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eThe Kenyan government's neglect of the country's coastal areas may have helped to spread Islamic extremism, according to one political analyst.  \u003cbr/\u003eIn November, authorities led a number of raids on mosques, which they said had become a fertile recruitment ground for militant groups.\u003cbr/\u003eTom Maliti, from International Justice Monitor, says joining-up could be seen as a \"way out\" for those from the area, where poverty is high and opportunities limited.\u003cbr/\u003eKenyan troops unlock the gates to the Masjid Mousa mosque in Mombasa.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's re-opening after ten days of enforced closure by Kenyan authorities who suspected the mosque - and three others - of being hotbeds of Islamic extremism.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's part of a government sweep to tackle radicalisation along Kenya's coast, as well as limiting the influence of militant groups like the Somali-based al-Shabaab.\u003cbr/\u003eAl-Shabaab has been blamed for more than 135 attacks on Kenyan soil since the country sent troops into Somalia in 2011 to fight the militants.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd there are fears the group's influence is growing in Kenya, alarming officials in the country.\u003cbr/\u003eIn November, 500 police took part in raids on the mosques - leading to the arrests of 251 people.\u003cbr/\u003eSome human rights groups have criticised the moves and say the Kenyan authorities are in danger of angering the Muslim population.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Nelson Marwa, Mombasa County Commissioner, has moved to rest these claims.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The government has no intention to take over mosques, the aim of the government is to ensure security so as to ensure mosques and churches are not turned into dens of robbers and thieves and criminals to undermine security of the citizens and also undermine national security.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut national security does remain at risk.\u003cbr/\u003eAuthorities say they recovered grenades and a pistol during the November raids and one person was shot dead after trying to throw a grenade at police outside Masjid Mousa mosque, a place of worship that officials say also harbours radical Muslims.\u003cbr/\u003eAll four mosques have now re-opened - and political analyst Tom Maliti says it's been down to public pressure. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The public didn't like the idea that mosques had been closed anyway and the government may have concluded that it had done its job and there was no need to close the mosques or to keep the mosques closed,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eThe government has previously cited the four mosques as centres for recruitment for the al-Qaida-linked al-Shabaab group.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for a bus attack which left 28 people dead at the end of November - which they say was in retaliation for the closure of the four mosques. \u003cbr/\u003eKenyan officials say say non-Muslims were singled out and targeted during the attack.\u003cbr/\u003eMaliti says there are many reasons why radicalisation may be on the rise in the country.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There are several causes. One is, the rise of Al-Shabaab or the increased prominence of Al-Shabaab in Kenya.
