and the elderly. \u003cbr/\u003eClaudio Mauricio Vieira Souza is a researcher with the Vital Brazil Medical Institute.\u003cbr/\u003eHe extracts the scorpion's venom by using electrodes and a tiny capillary tube. \u003cbr/\u003eHe performs this operation hundreds of times in order to obtain a sufficient quantity used in the manufacture of an antivenin distributed to public hospitals. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says the animal's poison is neuro-toxic effecting the nervous system and causing intense pain.\u003cbr/\u003eSouza says if the toxins are accumulated in the lungs it can cause death.\u003cbr/\u003eScorpions thrive in dark, cluttered, garbage-strewn areas on the outskirts of large cities where they find plenty of cockroaches and other insects to feed on, and where they are safe from their natural predators, like large lizards, hawks and owls.\u003cbr/\u003eThe institute is training health services in affected regions in the identification and capture of these animals.\u003cbr/\u003eBecause scorpions feed on cockroaches, health officials say the insects must be eliminated first.\u003cbr/\u003eThey are also suggesting the use of hens and chicken around the
