There were around 70 or 80 people in a room measuring three metres by three metres. Inmates are kept for months without charge.
El-Sayed, a veteran of the 2011 revolution, was arrested with two other prominent liberal activists as they drove in a car in downtown Cairo on January 25, a day that saw multiple protests by both Islamists and secular anti-military groups.
Released earlier this month, he described his ordeal to The Associated Press saying he was "beaten with sticks and given electric shocks", poorly fed and left in freezing cells with just one blanket.
At the first police station they were taken to, in Cairo's Azbakeya district, he said he and other detainees rounded up in protests were forced to stand blindfolded for 14 hours and were repeatedly punched and beaten with sticks.
He and the others were taken to a second police station and held for 10 days, with about 15 people crammed in a 7-square-metre cell, then taken to Abu Zaabal prison just north of Cairo.
The arriving inmates were beaten with sticks, el-Sayed said.
Afterward, they were packed 30 inmates in a single cell, with no mattresses or beds, only a blanket to sleep on the cold concrete floor.
El-Sayed would spend the next 16 days there.
