Close-up children in window of children's home, baby waves
Lithuania's first Window of Life has been opened in an orphanage in Vilnius.
The drop-off facility allows mothers who cannot care for their newborn babies to anonymously leave them at the orphanage and avoid legal consequences.
The move is an attempt to reduce the number of terminations and infant deaths in the largely Catholic country.
A chilly, autumnal day in Lithuania's capital, Vilnius - the current European Capital of Culture.
This week it's citizens welcomed the opening of the first 'Window of Life' project in the country.
Mothers in the city who find themselves with unwanted babies can now drop them off at a special window built in to the regional children's home.
The window opens from the outside. It's heated, ventilated and fitted with a camera. When a baby is placed into a cradle attached to the inside, a signal alerts the staff.
But parents dropping off unwanted babies needn't have fear of any legal consequences. Despite the camera - the 'Window of Life' offers a safe haven for unwanted babies and total anonymity and freedom from prosecution to parents.
According to official statistics, every year six to seven dead newborns are found in rubbish bins and public lavatories in Lithuania. Up to ten thousand terminations are performed annually in this predominantly Catholic country. This number doesn't include illegal terminations.
The project was launched by local MP, Asta Baukute.
"As a young politician, I thus assume responsibility for the consequences.
