Mid of group arriving at formation of rocks and observing them\u003cbr/\u003eThe study of evolutionary palaeontology has recently thrown up important information about the earth's family tree.\u003cbr/\u003eThe province of Chubut in Argentina's Patagonia is one of the most topical regions in fossil unearthing and is becoming an vital window to our Jurassic past.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the shadow of the Cerro CÄÅ¼Ëndor, a 600 metre-high limestone bluff in Patagonia, signs of life are few and far between among the barancas, the high walled cliffs.\u003cbr/\u003eAs deserted districts across the globe are increasingly throwing up relics of early evolutionary history, this windswept valley in Chubut province is fast becoming one of the world's leading sites for palaeontologists.\u003cbr/\u003eRecent finds show that about 80 million years ago these vast 'campanas', areas of red sand surrounding the now almost forgotten village, were teaming with dinosaur life.\u003cbr/\u003eFossilised discoveries in this area over the past decade read like a cast from the blockbuster movie, Jurassic Park.\u003cbr/\u003eThey include the largest dinosaur carnivore ever found and other bones that suggest an even bigger species.\u003cbr/\u003eFernando Novas is head researcher of the National Council for Scientific and Technical Investigation (CONICET).\u003cbr/\u003eHe says this is opening a window to some of the great evolutionary puzzles.\u003cbr/\u003eWith continuous erosion by wind and water exposing several geological layers, the Chubut region is the perfect environment for unearthing fossils.\u003cbr/\u003eDespite such potential, Argentine palaeontology has only blossomed in the past decade.\u003cbr/\u003eNow a group of young argentine Palaeontologists are propelling this breakthrough.\u003cbr/\u003eThe team from the Egidio Feruglio museum in Trelew have hand dug half a dozen quarries in nearby canyons that have yielded globally important fossils. \u003cbr/\u003eMuch of the time they aren't sure what treasures they have until they get a block of fossils back to the lab.\u003cbr/\u003eDiego Pol, curator of the museum, says the mammoth tasks involved are clearly paying off and that he and his colleagues are able to understand something of the evolution of the dinosaur.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Egidio Feruglio Museum in Trelew has the job of displaying these epic finds.\u003cbr/\u003eAmong them is the 37 metre long aptly named Argentinosaurus.\u003cbr/\u003ePol says that the discoveries presented here are reshaping thinking on the anatomy of these creatures. He says that, for example, the Carnotaurus has short limbs and horns above the eyes.\u003cbr/\u003eThe local municipality of Chubut has funded the Palaeontologists and the museum.\u003cbr/\u003eThey already have the most up to date laboratory in South America, and as the tourism potential of Jurassic Chubut grows, resources are also likely to follow.\u003cbr/\u003eStan Underwood is a British tourist visiting the museum. He says that he had not realised the importance of recent finds.\u003cbr/\u003eWith the province proving to be ever fertile ground for fossils there's also no shortage of work to go around.\u003cbr/\u003eThe young team of palaeontologists is convinced that many prizes remain among its uncharted mountains, and they are also retracing the footsteps of historic excavations.\u003cbr/\u003eWith the most up to date technology they are hoping to dig up deeper knowledge regarding the region's past residents.\u003cbr/\u003eAs they set out on their latest fieldtrip, head technician from the Trelew museum, Pablo Puerta, explains they are revisiting a quarry where renowned American Palaeontologist George Geller Simpson made some key discoveries in 1935.\u003cbr/\u003eBack in 2001 Pablo himself, within sight of the Cerro Condor, unearthed the fossil of a tiny shrew like mammal.\u003cbr/\u003eThis find gave a critical snapshot to the geochronolic evolution of the supercontinent that is known as Gondwana. \u003cbr/\u003eThe southern landmass linking the then steamy jungles of Patagonia, in which the dinosaurs grazed, to what is known today as Africa, Antarctica and Australasia is a much uncharted ecosystem.\u003cbr/\u003eAs the team continue to survey the barren mountain ridges they search for unusual rock formations hoping more mysteries
