There was a huge hurricane and victims have been counted by thousands, which is dreadful, I mean it's a huge number. But if you think about it, 15 years ago there was a similar hurricane in Bangladesh which killed 150,000 people. And 15 years before that it was 500,000. So we're still trying to improve, and we certainly look forward to having no victims at all. Various of forest \u003cbr/\u003eThe world is facing escalating environmental problems such as climate change. \u003cbr/\u003eBut monitoring changes to our planet is a mammoth task. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are many environmental observing systems globally and now there's a system in place to collate all that information to help understand our world better. \u003cbr/\u003eRising sea levels.....melting glaciers .... floods and desertification. \u003cbr/\u003eOur weather is getting ever more extreme and there are concerns that global warming is to blame. \u003cbr/\u003eScientists have reported temperatures around the world rose an average 1.3 degrees Fahrenheit (- 17 degrees Celsius) over the past 100 years. \u003cbr/\u003eThe United Nations Environment Programme says in the Northern hemisphere, snow cover has been shrinking at an average of 1.3 percent per decade over the last 40 years.  \u003cbr/\u003eAhead of the UN climate change summit in Bali, Indonesia, scientists have been meeting in South Africa to discuss how we can better monitor our changing Earth. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Cape Town International Convention Centre is hosting representatives from more than 70 governments and 50 international organisations at the Group on Earth Observations Summit, or GEO.\u003cbr/\u003eGEO links the many thousands of scientific observation instruments around the world. \u003cbr/\u003eGEO Secretariat Director Jose Achache explains the system works by gathering information gathered by lots of independent monitoring stations to create a global picture. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the Republic of Congo (not DRC) researcher Antoine Kinana helps run a small monitoring station in the savanna.\u003cbr/\u003eEvery week he checks the carbon levels and other useful meteorological data.\u003cbr/\u003eAntoine is using a device to measure soil humidity. \u003cbr/\u003eThe results will help researchers chart carbon dioxide (CO2) absorption in diverse weather conditions, like dry or rainy seasons.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says that grass needs moisture to grow. \u003cbr/\u003eIn periods of prolonged drought lack of water can cause devastation in vulnerable regions. \u003cbr/\u003eA dry spell in Kenya in February 2006 resulted in the deaths of valuable livestock. \u003cbr/\u003eMembership to GEO is voluntary, and now over 70 government members contribute to its common goals, usually sharing information for free.\u003cbr/\u003eZhang Wenjian, Deputy Chinese GEO representative explains that a new initiative under the GEO umbrella is Brazil and China joining forces to distribute satellite imagery to Africa at zero cost.\u003cbr/\u003eGovernments and organisations in Africa can use this free satellite imagery to monitor and respond to emerging natural disasters, deforestation, desertification and drought.\u003cbr/\u003eThe South African Department of Science and Technology Director General, Phil Mjwara, says GEO can be useful in monitoring possible disease outbreaks in the aftermath of natural disasters such as floods. \u003cbr/\u003eProfessor John Field from the University of Cape Town Marine Research Institute is studying the effects of climate change on the earth's oceans.\u003cbr/\u003eHe explains how linking the diverse observing systems together paints a full picture of the earth's condition.\u003cbr/\u003eDepletion of natural resources, emergence of new diseases, impact of migration, loss of biodiversity and climate change are some of the earth's most pressing problems.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd as GEO Secretariat Director, Jose Achache explains, it saves lives.\u003cbr/\u003eAchache says that in the case of the recent Bangladesh floods, GEO provided linkage to elements like the World Meteorological Organisation, the United Nations Environment programme, and others.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 13th Conference of the Parties of the U.N.
