So when someone sends ten (Kenyan) shillings (10 US cents), ten shilling in cash is there, whereas if you send a cheque, the cheque might bounce or take some while to clear. So what we''ve found is that of the cash raised when we checked this morning it was a total of two hundred and seventy four million (Kenyan shillings, 2.9 million US dollars) raised, a hundred and fifty (million Kenyan shillings, 1.6 million US dollars) of that came from M-PESA.\"\u003cbr/\u003e11. Various of women waiting for food aid\u003cbr/\u003eKenyan people, many of whom exist on less than ten US dollars a day, are rallying together to donate money to help the victims of the East Africa famine.\u003cbr/\u003eMany are choosing to donate via a mobile phone banking service.\u003cbr/\u003eMore than 12 (m) million people in East Africa are in need of food aid because of the severe drought that is affecting the region. \u003cbr/\u003eThe United Nations says 2.8 (m) million of those, many of them children, are in need of immediate lifesaving assistance.\u003cbr/\u003ePeople from across Kenya are donating money to help out those affected by the ongoing famine.\u003cbr/\u003eMany of them are donating hard earned cash out of their own meagre wages.\u003cbr/\u003eJane Wangui Wainana lives and works in Korogocho, a shanty town area in the capital Nairobi.\u003cbr/\u003eShe earns about eight US dollars each day selling food and says she wants to donate some of that to help out people more needy than herself.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I want you to help me send this money as it is a contribution for the hungry people.\"\u003cbr/\u003eJane is donating money to the Kenyan Red Cross using the M-PESA system of money transfer, done with a mobile phone.\u003cbr/\u003eM-PESA allows people to make basic banking transactions such as sending and receiving money without having a bank account.\u003cbr/\u003eBob Collymore, is CEO of Safaricom the company which runs M-PESA.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says the system is very useful for gathering donations.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The good thing about M-PESA is that it is immediate cash. That''s why I sent the money.\"\u003cbr/\u003eDonations sent via M-PESA are safe and the money is quickly turned into food aid which can be delivered to those in need.\u003cbr/\u003eMillions of dollars of food aid are now on their way to the those suffering in East Africa, thanks to donations gathered by M-PESA.\u003cbr/\u003eLand across East Africa is drought stricken; parched and dry and crops, and livestock, are dying.\u003cbr/\u003eCEO of Inuka Kenya Trust, a charity which works to empower Kenyans, John Githongo says the droughts cannot be controlled but famine is caused by human mismanagement.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says people are suffering because of poor governance as Kenyan officials have failed to invest in infrastructure like irrigation and boreholes which could have helped rural people by saving livestock and crops.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Droughts are caused by God and famines are caused by men and so this is a governance drought that is caused by the dysfunctionality, incompetence and greed of the government.
