Wide of sunset over Lake Birket, Siwa \u003cbr/\u003eRising salt lake levels are threatening the Egyptian oasis in Siwa. \u003cbr/\u003eThe vegetation is being killed off as the soil becomes contaminated with salt from the lakes. \u003cbr/\u003eThe ancient citadel of Siwa, made of salt and mud, rises high above the modern town near the Egyptian, Libyan border.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever the fertile soils are becoming contaminated with salt as a result of water-logged subsoil.\u003cbr/\u003eMohamed Adool, a Siwan farmer, says salt from the lakes, that surround the oasis, has already started killing off the date palms. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I am very concerned about the rising level of the salt lake. Already some around the edge are beginning to die and it will only be a matter of time before the problem gets really bad,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe local people have created countless unregulated wells to source water for their farms by drilling into the subsoil.\u003cbr/\u003eThe excess water drains off into the salt lakes and causes them to rise quickly, then the excess water seeps back into the subsoil contaminated with salt.\u003cbr/\u003eMehdi Hweiti, head of tourism in Siwa, says the Egyptian government has created large regulated water sources for the use of local people, so they don''t need to drill anymore. \u003cbr/\u003e\"This is one of the sources the government already dug to get mineral water for drinking water in Siwa. with mud it is known as \"kerchef\".\u003cbr/\u003e\"Kerchef\" is used to build this eco-resort at the foot of the White Mountain - the Adrere Amellal.   \u003cbr/\u003eWorking with kerchef requires skill and experience .  \u003cbr/\u003ePumping water from one lake to another is believed to be the best short term solution for the increase in salt water.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, Mounir Neamatallah, owner of the Adrere Amellal eco-resort and environmentalist says that the use of pumps to move water from one lake to another is causing environmental problems. \u003cbr/\u003eSo far the pumping has not slowed down the rise in the salt water levels nor the destruction of palm trees on the edge of the lakes \u003cbr/\u003eNeamatallah believes that the only way around the problem is to ban the drilling of more wells entirely. \u003cbr/\u003eThe naturally occurring large water sources are a boon to Siwans and tourists alike.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd what would the oasis be without plenty of water ? \u003cbr/\u003eHwaity says that the best all round solution to is to divert excess water towards a depression in the desert.\u003cbr/\u003eFor the time being the old way of life has changed little and the economy still depends on the date palm.\u003cbr/\u003eBut with salt water now affecting Siwa''s main crop, the fate of the region''s economy remains
