Flags \u003cbr/\u003eAs the Democratic Senator from New York and former First Lady, Hillary Clinton will certainly be well-known when she arrives in Iowa this weekend,  but will the cosmopolitan candidate be well-received?\u003cbr/\u003eIowa, a midwestern state with a population of nearly three million, is known for farms, fields and traditional values and for playing an important part in the election of the next president.\u003cbr/\u003eThe field of Democratic candidates continues to grow and includes the Governor of Iowa, Democrat Tom Vilsack, who announced his candidacy in Mount Pleasant Iowa on November 30 last year and could prove to be a local favourite. \u003cbr/\u003eThe caucus in Iowa starts the race for the presidency on January 14, 2008, and residents there could help decide very early in the contest who will be in and who will be out.\u003cbr/\u003eUnited States presidential candidates are about to get just what they don't need and don't want - a crush of primaries and caucuses leading off the 2008 campaign calendar.  \u003cbr/\u003eCaucuses are a series of precinct meetings across the state, held mostly in public buildings but also in churches and community centres, where local party members choose delegates for the party's national nominating convention. \u003cbr/\u003eEarly polls have shown that the leading candidates are Senator Barack Obama, John Edwards and Senator Hillary Clinton and Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack.\u003cbr/\u003eSome of the biggest states, including California, Florida, New Jersey and possibly Illinois, are moving to place their primary vote dates near the front of the 2008 primary line-up. This could lead to a very fast primary season, since the states that are moving their primary dates up will form one big national primary.    \u003cbr/\u003eIt also means that only a month after the Iowa caucuses kick off the presidential nominating season on January 14 next year, the contests for the Democratic and Republican nominations will be effectively decided.\u003cbr/\u003eNo one thinks an early narrowing of the field is a good idea - not the candidates, not the parties and not the voters. \u003cbr/\u003eThe early push increases the pressure on candidates to get in the race early and raise unprecedented amounts of money. Political strategists frequently cite 100 million US dollars as roughly the amount each presidential candidate will need to raise in 2007 to compete effectively in a compressed 2008 primary season.\u003cbr/\u003eOne reason candidates will need the money is that they'll need to be ready to shift quickly from relatively cheap, personal politicking in small population states like Iowa and New Hampshire to expensive, message-driven advertising in big population states. Candidates will also have to mobilise their forces on the ground to travel across the country to campaign in person.\u003cbr/\u003eThe tentative nominating schedule begins in January with causcuses in Iowa and then Nevada (for the Democrats only), followed quickly by primaries in New Hampshire and South Carolina (for Democrats on January 29 and Republicans on February 2).\u003cbr/\u003eSix states, as well as South Carolina, held Democratic presidential contests on the first Tuesday in February 2004 - Arizona, Delaware, Missouri, New Mexico, North Dakota and Oklahoma. Those states plan to hold contests in early February 2008, though some, like Arizona and North Dakota, haven't decided exactly what day.\u003cbr/\u003eAmong the other states that have moved up to the first Tuesday (February 5, 2008), or are considering doing so, are Alabama, Arkansas, North Carolina and Utah.\u003cbr/\u003eRepublican Party officials were less willing to discuss the effects of a compressed primary calendar.\u003cbr/\u003eA presidential caucus is much different than a primary vote or a general election. It is grassroots politics where people gather together in public places like libraries, town halls and churches to show support for a particular candidate. In a general election, voters go to the polls to elect people to public office. In a primary, Republican and Democratic party members go to the polls to nominate candidates for office.\u003cbr/\u003eAt a caucus, people attend a local meeting where they begin nominating presidential candidates by expressing a  preference for a candidate. In Iowa, caucus-goers elect local delegates who go to state county conventions, where those delegates, in turn, elect delegates to district and state conventions where the national convention delegates are selected. \u003cbr/\u003eThere are an estimated 2,000 precincts in Iowa, and most of the precincts will hold a caucus on January 14,
