And, with the cost of property rising all the time, up to 60%  of residents are living in shanty towns and slums.\u003cbr/\u003eReal estate in Bombay has always been the highest in India, but lately it has risen to  extraordinary heights.\u003cbr/\u003eThe city is virtually splitting at its seams. And over crowding means that as many as 60  % of Bombay's residents now live in shanty towns and slums.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the lack of accommodation doesn't all come down to over population.  Free market  reforms introduced by Prime Minister Narasimha Rao four years ago could be partially  to blame.\u003cbr/\u003eReforms encouraged foreign companies to move in to Bombay - the heart of the Indian  market.\u003cbr/\u003eMany of the investors now face a shortage of appropriate office space and expenses\u003cbr/\u003e that exceed their most pessimistic estimations. \u003cbr/\u003eAdditional pressure on the real estate market comes from Indian businessmen from  Hong Kong. Uncertainty over the transfer of Hong Kong from Britain to China has lead  many Hong Kong based Indian firms to invest in Bombay property.\u003cbr/\u003eFor those with the money to buy in to the property market, the rewards are high.   \u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"The foremost aspect is big return. Much more return in real estate business in Bombay  in India than many, many other businesses. In fact, the return can be 100% on the  investment in real estate in Bombay, which is not the fact anywhere (else), hundred  percent per annum I mean! Choudhary, Chairman C \u0026amp; C Construction Company\u003cbr/\u003eBusiness buy ups of real estate have a domino effect on the cost of housing.\u003cbr/\u003eTo make matters worse, rapid change in social behaviour means that many couples are  now breaking with tradition.\u003cbr/\u003eNewly weds - who would have once lived with in-laws - now want a place of their own.  Sadly, only a few can afford an apartment.\u003cbr/\u003eThe only solution for many of the rest is to move to the shanty towns on the out skirts  of the city. From the slums they gaze at the apartments they will never be in a position  to afford.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is Dharavi, Asia's biggest slum. Many of Bombay's middle class citizens will make  it their home. With them come the trappings of  modern urban life: satellite dishes,  Televisions, and air conditioners.\u003cbr/\u003eThey have set up businesses here too.
