One of few to survive the Second World War with very little damage it now thrives as a living medieval city rich in baroque heritage.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the Middle Ages, it was among the wealthiest and largest urban centres in Europe with trading connections as far away as Paris, Venice and Kiev.\u003cbr/\u003eNow this medieval town, located on the Danube river in Bavaria, has been added to UNESCO's list of world heritage sites  to preserve its beauty for future generations to enjoy.\u003cbr/\u003eRegensburg Cathedral in the heart of the old city, is testimony to a city rich in religious and cultural history.\u003cbr/\u003eThe cathedral is the main work of pure German Gothic architecture in Bavaria. The medieval stained glass  windows are considered unique in Germany. \u003cbr/\u003eWork began on the city's cathedral in the thirteenth century a stunning example of Gothic architecture. \u003cbr/\u003eThe building  took nearly four centuries to complete. \u003cbr/\u003eFrancesco Bandarin, Director of World Heritage Centre, UNESCO says that the fact Regensburg was largely undamaged in the second world war means it remains a fantastic example of a traditional German Baroque city which they want to preserve for the future. \u003cbr/\u003eThe city's development began with the founding of the Roman legion camp Castra Regina in 179 AD, but the tourist office says that people were living in this area of the river Danube since the Stone Ages. \u003cbr/\u003eStill today the remains of the Roman camps can be visited in different locations in the city. \u003cbr/\u003eAn important trading hub in the 12th and 13th centuries, the city grew rich on its economic trade. \u003cbr/\u003eIt was during this period that the impressive stone bridge was constructed. \u003cbr/\u003eKlemens Unger, Head of Regensburg Culture Department says the city boast both roman and gothic buildings. \u003cbr/\u003eStrolling along the atmospheric, narrow lanes and crossing the historical squares it's easy to imagine what life was like here in the past. \u003cbr/\u003eUnger says that Rengensburg has some two million tourists per year and they want to develop the industry further. \u003cbr/\u003eJung Kit is visiting from Hong Kong, he says it is an incredible city. \u003cbr/\u003eErwin Schmidt, a resident of the city says he is proud that Regensburg has been recognised by UNESCO. \u003cbr/\u003eRudolf Betz, a German tourist says the main historic sites are very unique. \u003cbr/\u003eUnlike many cities in Germany Regensburg was not badly affected during the second world war, however the city was attacked in 1943 leaving 402 people
