tensions between militants and the Palestinian government, which has vowed to disarm gunmen in the hope of restarting Middle East peace negotiations. \u003cbr/\u003eThe fight started after Palestinian police confiscated a gun from an Al Aqsa Brigade member in Nablus, prompting gunmen in nearby Balata to fire at Palestinian police stationed at the camp's edge. \u003cbr/\u003eFour civilians and a policeman were wounded in the intermittent battles which went on for several hours.\u003cbr/\u003eThe gunbattle came as Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in the West Bank town of Ramallah to discuss an upcoming US-sponsored Middle East conference. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter the meeting, Abbas said his government was trying to disarm militants, collect illegal weapons and reform security forces - Palestinian obligations under the newly revived U.S.-supported road map for peace. \u003cbr/\u003eMonday's firefight in the Balata refugee camp near Nablus raised questions about Abbas' limited control in the occupied West Bank, after the rival group Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip in mid-June. \u003cbr/\u003eIsrael has expressed doubts about Abbas' ability to implement a future peace deal. \u003cbr/\u003eThe gunmen belonged to the Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade, a violent offshoot of Abbas' Fatah movement. \u003cbr/\u003eThe firefight came just days after three hundred extra security officers were brought in to the central West Bank town of Nablus, to supplement a force already numbering three thousand, part of efforts by the Palestinian
