Visitors from all around the world are now choosing it as a winter getaway for plenty of surfing, nature walks and...\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003cspan class='full-description hide'\u003eThe small town of Tofino on the west coast of Vancouver Island is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Canada. \u003cbr/\u003eVisitors from all around the world are now choosing it as a winter getaway for plenty of surfing, nature walks and other coast-side fun.\u003cbr/\u003eDiehard surfers near the Canadian town of Tofino never let cold and blustery weather stop them from hitting the waves. \u003cbr/\u003eThe town attracts thousands of surf enthusiasts and nature lovers all year round.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile these surfers aren't new to the sport, they're getting a few handy tips from Long Beach Lodge Surf Club Manager, Chance McCullough. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says surfing here in Tofino is great all year round, and it's not too hard to stay warm.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The only thing that you'll find cold is your face,\" says McCullough.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Basically, if you have a hood on, in the wintertime we've got hoods, gloves, boots, so this is the only part that's really cold. The summer time, I wear pretty much what I have on now, no gloves, no hood, no boots. So yeah, you can always stay warm. The more you work - especially when you're first learning - you're working a lot harder than somebody who has been surfing for years, so you're definitely going to be warm.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the surf instructor, because beaches here are relatively flat, it makes it a safe place for beginners trying to find their feet on the waves.\u003cbr/\u003eThat's because it doesn't have any dangerous undertow currents common to steep-banked beaches.\u003cbr/\u003eTwo and a half-hour private, one on one surf lessons cost 198 Canadian dollars ($167 USD) at Long Beach Lodge. \u003cbr/\u003eAll surf lessons include full equipment such as wetsuits, boots and boards.\u003cbr/\u003eLong Beach Lodge is one of a number of luxury resorts perched on the edge of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve - a 511 square-kilometre (197 square-mile) strip of land and ocean. \u003cbr/\u003eThe park is best known for its rugged coastline, rainforests and surf-friendly beaches.\u003cbr/\u003eDuring the winter months, the area receives a large amount of rain.\u003cbr/\u003eOn average, December and January see more than 400mm (15.7 inches) of rain per month, according to Environment Canada. \u003cbr/\u003eThe average January temperature is 4 degrees Celsius (40 degrees Fahrenheit), which means most visitors wrap up.\u003cbr/\u003eAside from surfing, Tofino also offers visitors opportunities to go kayaking, ride in traditional canoes and visit nearby hot springs. \u003cbr/\u003eLong Beach Lodge has 20 two-bedroom cottages just steps from the beach.\u003cbr/\u003eThey're surrounded by natural coastal vegetation and trees. \u003cbr/\u003eInside the main lodge there are another 41 rooms. \u003cbr/\u003eTwo 'Pacific Penthouse' suites feature four-poster beds, fireplaces, and views of Cox Bay and the Pacific Ocean.\u003cbr/\u003eThe resort's main gathering place is known as the 'Great Room'.\u003cbr/\u003eHere, guests can relax and dine next to a large granite fireplace and peer out over the crashing waves.\u003cbr/\u003eExecutive Chef, Ian Riddick, is preparing the evening meals.\u003cbr/\u003eTonight, there's smoked salmon, oysters and mussels. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Seafood is king out here on the West coast,\" says Riddick.\u003cbr/\u003e\"So everything from wild salmon to fresh-caught halibut. One of the really unique things that we're able to offer is Dungeness crab, 12 months of the year. It's fished in Clayoquot Sound. It's a very healthy, sustainable fishery, which really links in with what we're trying to do with the rest of our menu. So really, scallops, mussels, you name it. If it's seafood, it's on one of our menus, and that links breakfast, lunch and dinner.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Riddick, the restaurant serves only Ocean-Wise certified seafood. \u003cbr/\u003eDuring the winter months, rates at Long Beach Lodge start at 199 Canadian dollars ($168 USD) for standard rooms inside the lodge and 329 Canadian dollars ($278 USD) per night for cottages. \u003cbr/\u003eDuring high season, rates start at 299 Canadian dollars ($253 USD) for standard rooms and 589 Canadian dollars ($498 USD) for cottages. \u003cbr/\u003eLong Beach Lodge also offers customised boat expeditions. \u003cbr/\u003eDown by the harbour, Captain Josh Lewis is preparing this 12-seat vessel for a tour of Clayoquot Sound.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's home to some of Canada's last remaining old-growth forests. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to Lewis, getting out on the water allows visitors to experience the area in a unique way.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The islands, the wildlife. During the summer, when the whales are migrating through - the grey whales and humpback whales - the sightings can be pretty good. We see wolves out here, we see bears, the bald eagles, tufted puffins,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"There's all kinds of different wildlife out here. The beaches. It's just a different perspective on the area.
