And that's his new mission with his appointment Friday as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador.\u003cbr/\u003e   He's a natural for the job.\u003cbr/\u003e   For Hancock, imbued with boundless energy, curiosity and a cool cat poise, jazz is a \"metaphor for freedom, but freedom with discipline.\" It is \"in the moment,\" too, and those are ingredients for transmitting a sense of rigor, excellence and even literacy while building bridges across cultures in a changing, globalized world.\u003cbr/\u003e   He draws his own sense of discipline from 40 years of Buddhism, initially exploring it to better connect with his audiences and able to use it today to turn challenges into opportunities _ something he says is relevant to his new role.\u003cbr/\u003e   \"I believe that every human being is necessary. Nobody is wasted,\" he said _ but their activities must serve humanity.\u003cbr/\u003e   The life so far of the 71-year-old Hancock, who studied classical music starting at age 7, could be a metaphor for his UNESCO mission.\u003cbr/\u003e   In his more than half-century career as a musician, he has renewed old favorites with edgy electronic sounds, giving new life to signature pieces like \"Watermelon Man.\"\u003cbr/\u003e   His \"The Imagine Project\" album is a multicultural potpourri with 11 countries and seven languages aimed at promoting peace and social responsibility. He founded The International Committee of Artists for Peace.\u003cbr/\u003e   \"This is not a free lunch,\" UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova laughingly advised Hancock at a lunch before his formal appointment. Much is expected. \"I associate jazz with freedom,\" she said, quickly adding that Hancock fits the job description. \"He believes it. He's doing this already.\"\u003cbr/\u003e   There have been dozens of Goodwill Ambassadors, celebrities or other noted figures across the world promoting the goals of the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, but Hancock doesn't feel diminished to be a new link in a long chain at one of the U.N.'s lower profile institutions.\u003cbr/\u003e   \"It feels like an answer to some of my biggest dreams,\" he said in an interview. \"To be able to work for an organization that really cares about the people in the world. It really cares about working toward the globalized peaceful world that people actually want to leave in.\"\u003cbr/\u003e   As Goodwill Ambassador, he wants to take his role beyond jazz to be more than a musical envoy. However, jazz-related projects are already on his plate: creating an International Jazz Day, something that could see fruition by next year, establishing jazz as an \"intangible cultural heritage\" of UNESCO and working to get recognition as UNESCO World Heritage sites to New Orleans, his hometown Chicago and Dockery Farms in the Mississippi Delta _ a plantation community that gave birth to the Blues.\u003cbr/\u003e   However, he also wants to make his world stage a world classroom, hoping to travel to places like India, Cambodia and countries in Africa, the Middle East and eastern Europe.\u003cbr/\u003e   His goal for his new post overlap those of his music.\u003cbr/\u003e   \"Before I go on stage, my prayer is for the band to be as one, to have a unified spirit and ... for the purity that's in the depth of the heart to touch the depths of the people in the audience.\"\u003cbr/\u003e   He will not forsake his music. Hancock performed at La Scala this year and plans classical orchestral concerts focused around George Gershwin's \"Rhapsody in Blue.\"\u003cbr/\u003e   \"I'm just excited about each day and the possibility of what I might be able to do,\" he said. And his appointment as Goodwill Ambassador \"gives me a (new) lease on life. It's making me feel younger. I've just started.
